Mega Crit Reverses Beta Updates For Slay The Spire 2

Developer Mega Crit issued a new update for Slay the Spire 2 on Thursday night, targeting its opt-in beta branch. The update responds to community pushback regarding card balance and character utility. The adjustments reverse prior modifications to specific cards and deliver numeric power increases to the game's least selected character.

This latest patch centers on the Prepared card, a mechanic that allows players to draw one card and discard one card for zero energy. Mega Crit had previously increased the energy cost of the card, an action that triggered negative user reviews on the game's Steam store page. Players argued that the change ruined Sly decks, which rely on zero-cost discard triggers. In the update notes, developers stated that while they remain concerned about the dominance of Sly deck strategies, they concede that the card is an integral part of that deck's identity.

  • Buffed Falling Star card: Damage increased from 7(11) -> 8(12)
  • Buffed Glitterstream card: Next Turn Block increased from 4(6) -> 5(7)
  • Buffed Parry card: Block gain increased from 8(11) -> 10(14)
  • Buffed Refine Blade card: Forge increased from 6(10) -> 9(13)
  • Buffed Celestial Might card: Upgrade changed from +2 damage -> 1 additional hit
  • Buffed Guiding Star card: now draws cards immediately instead of next turn
  • Buffed Sword Sage card: no longer increases the cost of Sovereign Blade
  • Changed Spoils of War card: now draws 2 cards, but Forge decreased from 12(17) -> 5(8)

The patch also brings extensive adjustments to the Regent. This character retains a reputation among players as difficult to master and holds the lowest pick rate among the available cast. The developers increased base damage and block numbers on several of his core cards, including Falling Star and Parry.

Prior to these targeted character adjustments, Mega Crit introduced a larger systemic update that reduced shop relic prices by 25 gold and added a Phobia Mode to replace specific triggering visual assets. That earlier update also increased enemy health and attack patterns. The developers specifically buffed the Doormaker boss, adding a mechanic where the entity consumes every tenth card a player draws.

The previous update also actively targeted infinite decks, which are card combinations that allow players to cycle resources indefinitely to deal damage without ending their turn. I think that it is overall cool to observe the game's turnarounds, which are caused, sometimes by just a single change in a combination, as it was with the previous patch, when they removed the so-called Infinity Deck, which caused the Ironclad to fall from the most powerful hero all the way to... the weakest—just removed the infinity deck. You will say imbalance and chaos. And I say dynamic development is a signal that the game is alive and responds directly to its community.

Player Leo Dilu published a 17-paragraph Steam review arguing that players do not inherently prefer infinite builds, but utilize them because current environmental pressures force them into cycling strategies. The player noted that the community accepts nerfs to strong strategies only when usable alternatives exist. Some players also expressed frustration that Mega Crit is balancing strategies in the single-player portion of the game to solve issues that only occur during cooperative multiplayer, where long turns force other players to wait.

These balancing changes are currently limited to the experimental branch of the game. Players must manually opt into this branch to test the adjustments. Mega Crit has reminded players that mechanics and numerical values tested in early access are subject to change and may not reflect the final state of the game at full release. Despite the isolated nature of the experimental branch, the previous patch prompted approximately 8,000 negative reviews on Steam in less than 24 hours.

The early access launch of Slay the Spire 2 on Steam has generated higher revenue in its first 14 days than the lifetime Steam earnings of both Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades 2.
