Valve’s Steam Machine Expected To Launch Around $700 As Cost Analysis Surfaces

The Steam Machine price is emerging as a focal point for analysts as Valve moves toward the system’s planned 2026 release window. The company has not issued formal pricing, but a detailed component analysis suggests the device will likely enter the market near the $700 mark.

Valve positioned the Steam Machine earlier this month as a compact gaming PC designed for living-room use. It has emphasized that its target range mirrors what consumers would spend when assembling a comparable PC from individual parts. That guidance prompted third-party scrutiny of the device’s likely manufacturing cost and potential retail positioning.

Linus Tech Tips conducted a build using parts that match the expected performance profile of Valve’s system. The test produced several scenarios based on historical lows, current component inflation, and alternative brand choices. The lowest historical pricing placed the build at roughly $602. Under present market conditions, the same configuration rose to $910 using mainstream retail pricing and about $813 when substituting lower-cost brands.

The channel then considered the cost structure Valve would face. The company’s direct-to-consumer model removes the retail markup that traditional stores apply. Large-scale sourcing would also give Valve the ability to secure bulk rates on power supplies, motherboards, and cases. After weighing these factors, the estimate narrowed to a likely consumer figure of about $700.

“I think it means $699 USD, if there are no changes in the market,” Linus said. “It’s probably above Valve’s cost today and there will be some opportunity for them to improve their margins over the several years lifespan of the device, as their initial investment gets paid off, and hopefully, RAM and SSD pricing returns to some form or normality.” — Linus Tech Tips

He added in a later assessment that the projected price positions the device as competitive without placing it in direct conflict with the broader PC hardware market. The estimate also reflects the challenges of fluctuating component prices, which remain volatile across storage and memory categories.

Valve has stated it will confirm official Steam Machine pricing before launch. The company is preparing the system as a follow-up to the Steam Deck, with a focus on offering a PC-level experience suitable for television setups. Analysts expect the price to play a decisive role in determining market reach.

Ampere Analysis believes the device could achieve sales in the low millions over several years, matching early projections for the Steam Deck. Analyst Katie Holt noted that the system is positioned to appeal to existing Steam users seeking another entry point into their library and to potential buyers who want PC functionality without committing to a full gaming rig.

“Ampere expects the new version of the Steam Machine to see success akin to the Steam Deck selling in the low millions over a few years...

“It will appeal to both established Steam gamers wanting an alternative access point to the platform perhaps through gaming on the TV, and also to those consumers on the fence about spending a lot on a gaming PC."

“Among these consumers, uptake will be heavily dependent on pricing. The specification of the Steam Machine is relatively low-powered compared to high-end gaming PCs, so ideally it should be priced in line with these expectations.” — Katie Holt, Ampere Analysis

Market response will depend on how closely Valve aligns the final figure with consumer expectations shaped by the analysis. A sub-$700 model would position the system above handhelds but below many full desktops, giving it a defined space in the mid-range field.
