Ubisoft Opens New Possibilities For Kassandra’s Role In Assassin’s Creed: Shadows
Ubisoft has begun to position Assassin’s Creed Shadows for a wider narrative reach, and the clearest signal comes through the renewed focus on Kassandra. The latest update introduced a small side quest that places a glowing statue of the Odyssey protagonist inside a remote Japanese cave, a location far removed from her origins yet consistent with her established immortality. Developers now confirm the statue is more than an Easter egg, pointing to a larger internal storyline that has not yet been made public.
Associate game director Simon Lemay-Comtois outlined these plans during a conversation with JorRaptor, describing the team’s intent to build a concrete foundation for her presence in Japan. His comments indicate that Ubisoft mapped out a full account of her travels in the region, including the people she met and the activities she pursued.

"And, yes, she’s immortal at this point in time and she could very well show up in Japan, so we kind of connected the dots together. The interview further explains how Ubisoft designed the statue’s arrival. Lemay-Comtois said Kassandra did not make the journey alone, emphasizing that she still had a ship and crew available to move heavy objects across continents. He described an internal justification for the statue’s placement, suggesting future updates may clarify the missing context. He also noted that the Isu-related details scattered through Shadows are part of a broader story framework that will continue to develop.
Players have known for years that Kassandra’s immortality places her at multiple points along the series timeline. Odyssey stretches from 431 to 422 B.C., and she survives until 2018, when she passes the Staff of Hermes to Layla Hassan. Every entry set before that cutoff is theoretically open to her involvement. Ubisoft has already demonstrated willingness to use her across eras; she appeared in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla through a post-launch quest that linked her with Eivor.
Her presence in Japan aligns with this pattern. It also answers community interest, as Kassandra remains one of the most popular characters in the franchise. She has returned several times through expansions or guest appearances, often anchoring some of the most memorable scenes in the games she visits. With Shadows structured around dual protagonists Yasuke and Naoe, a crossover would present another opportunity for an intergenerational link.
The statue has also reignited speculation about broader franchise plans. Ubisoft’s development slate includes Codename Hexe, which is rumored to explore 16th-century Germany and its witch trials. There is also a multiplayer project under the Invictus codename. Neither title has publicly confirmed any Kassandra connection, but timelines and themes leave room for potential overlap. For now, the focus remains on Shadows, which continues to receive incremental content as Ubisoft adjusts its post-launch strategy.
Lemay-Comtois confirmed that upcoming updates will be larger in scale than standard patches, compensating for the absence of a full expansion. These efforts suggest that narrative hooks like the Kassandra statue could form part of the game’s second-year arc. Developers have indicated that certain story elements are already prepared, though not yet shown.
The most recent update offers an example of Ubisoft’s approach. Alongside the Attack on Titan crossover, the new mission “A Puzzlement” sends Naoe and Yasuke to South Wakasa for a short investigation involving a sealed door. The task reconnects them with earlier contacts and delivers a set of mechanical improvements, while the Titan-themed activity functions as an optional, time-limited scenario. The statue of Kassandra appears within this patch as well, positioned at the end of an Animus door sequence that leads into an isolated cave. Its placement is abrupt, but the studio’s comments indicate it belongs to a defined storyline still kept internal.
