Both Dark Souls and Minecraft debuted in 2011 and went on to become genre-defining franchises. Given their shared legacy, it is no surprise that some fans would want to blend the atmospheric level design of Dark Souls with Minecraft’s unparalleled creative freedom. The world-building of the Souls series has been widely praised for over a decade, while Minecraft’s deep crafting and customization systems helped it become the best-selling game of all time. By combining these strengths, the team produced a build that has impressed and delighted fans of both titles.

Recreating the Undead Asylum in Minecraft

Reddit user ThickIllustrator794 showcased the team’s incredible in-game recreation of the Northern Undead Asylum, the ominous prison where players begin their journey in the first Dark Souls. In the original game, players must break free from a locked cell and navigate collapsing hallways and pest-ridden rooms before facing — or escaping — the Asylum Demon, the game’s first major boss encounter. The Asylum can also be revisited later, making it a key location both in gameplay and in the broader Dark Souls lore.

To rebuild this memorable setting in Minecraft, the creator enlisted help from fellow community members D0CT0R_Pau, who developed the surrounding terrain and ruined structures, and mageofgaming, who recreated the series’ iconic bonfire.

A Larger Vision for Lordran

The creators have even bigger plans: their long-term goal is to reconstruct all of Lordran within Minecraft. They intend to progress gradually, focusing on individual areas one at a time. The Firelink Shrine and the Painted World of Ariamis are next on their list of Dark Souls landmarks to reimagine. While there is no set timeline for completing this ambitious undertaking, the group maintains a Discord server where fans can follow the project’s development.
