The Creator of Resident Evil and The Evil Within Is Working on a New Video Game

Shinji Mikami is mostly known as the director of multiple Resident Evil installments. He left Capcom in 2006 and that year established PlatinumGames. Four years later, the studio released the third-person shooter Vanquish, where he also served as the director. However, he also left the company that year, and a few years later his new studio, Tango Gameworks, released another now well-known horror video game—The Evil Within.

His career in the gaming industry reminds some of football players careers, who are changing clubs every two to three years. Now Shinji Mikami’s new studio, called Unbound Games, is reportedly working on a new AAA original IP title for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC using Unreal Engine 5. There are no details about the upcoming project, although there is something about the company. The staff of Unbound Games currently consists of approximately 50 employees, and it’s looking to be expanded up to 150. It is mentioned that the team of developers previously worked on such titles as Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Shadow of the Colossus, and Hi-Fi Rush.

The official site of Unbound Games has also published an interview with its head, Shinju Mikami, where he was asked about the studio’s newest installment. You can check out his words below:

“I can’t give away any details yet, but it’s a AAA title for high-end consumers. However, to be honest, it would be difficult to do the same kind of work in Japan as overseas AAA titles, which require hundreds of billions of yen and hundreds of people working for five to seven years to create.

So, we’re aiming for AAA quality and AA content, which is why we’re creating a title that offers a rich gaming experience and allows you to be completely immersed in its world.

Creating something new requires repeated trial and error, implementation and modification, tinkering, and sometimes even deletion. Because we create by repeatedly building and breaking, trying this and that, things don’t always go as planned, and the content changes constantly.

To put it in a positive way, it’s a lively production style, a flexible development style. The programmers we work with have to be willing to put up with that all the way through, so we want people who enjoy that way of creating to join us.”

Considering the stuff of Unbound Games previously worked on Silent Hill and Resident Evil franchises and the experience of Shinji Mikami, there is a high probability we will see another horror game from him, although it’s just speculation, and there is no specific information on the game’s genre at the moment.
