GTA 4 Re-Release Rumors Heat Up After Rockstar Website Flubs

Rockstar Games, known for crafting massive open-world hits like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, has sparked a wave of speculation with recent errors on their support website. Fans have been buzzing about a potential GTA 4 re-release for modern platforms, alongside a next-gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2, after spotting unusual options on the site. The 2008 classic Grand Theft Auto IV, still a fan favorite for its gritty Liberty City and Niko Bellic’s story, is only playable on modern hardware via Xbox backward compatibility or a dated PC version. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, remains locked at 30fps on consoles, despite its stunning visuals begging for a current-gen upgrade.

The rumors started when a Reddit user noticed an “Online migration” option on the Red Dead Online support page, a feature typically tied to transferring data to new game versions, like GTA V Enhanced. This option was quickly removed, but not before multiple users confirmed seeing it, as shared onReddit. A day later, another user spotted PS4 listed as a platform for GTA 4 on the support site, despite the game being limited to PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. This was also pulled shortly after gaining traction on Reddit, fueling theories that Rockstar accidentally leaked upcoming ports. These slip-ups align with earlier leaks from insider Tez2, who in May 2025 claimed a GTA 4 port was in development, potentially launching by year’s end to offset GTA 6’s delay to May 26, 2026.

The GTA 4 re-release (it might be GTA IV Remastered or Remake) speculation isn’t new. Fans have long clamored for a modern version, especially after the 2023 Red Dead Redemption port hit PS4 and Switch. That release, handled by Double Eleven, was a straightforward conversion with minimal upgrades, disappointing those expecting a full remaster. The GTA 4 listing suggests a similar approach, likely targeting PS4, PS5 via backward compatibility, and possibly Switch 2, but skipping Xbox due to existing backward compatibility. Posts on X have echoed this excitement, with some citing a veteran Rockstar developer’s comment that GTA 4 “should be remastered” for its strong story. Tez2 clarified it would likely be a port, not a remaster, meaning no major graphical overhaul but possibly a 60fps boost and inclusion of DLCs like The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.

In a post on GTA Forums, Tez said,

“Someone at Rockstar hinted at the IV port, and by now it should’ve gone up a year in development. We may end up seeing it drop later this year.”

Maybe it will be an Enhanced Edition-style story with a replacement for the old version for PC as well, so players should think about it, maybe it's time to buy GTA 4 on Steam while it's being sold at the price of the 2009 version. But that's not exactly true!

The Red Dead Redemption 2 rumors point to a next-gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a potential Switch 2 port. The “Online migration” option suggests a paid release, similar to GTA V’s current-gen version, rather than a free patch. Arthur Morgan’s actor, Roger Clark, added fuel in June 2025, telling TheGamer, “I don’t think a remake of is something that we can write off for the future, or a remaster. We’ve already started to see it for GTA 5 and the original Red Dead Redemption.” This aligns with fan hopes for 60fps, improved HDR, and sharper visuals to match the game’s photorealistic world, which sold 70 million copies by early 2025. Leaks from NateTheHate suggest an August or September 2025 release, though Rockstar’s silence keeps it unconfirmed.

“I think it’s already starting to happen,” Clark tells TheGamer. “What’s also starting to happen is that classic games, games that did well, and games that still are able to hold on to their fandom are getting remastered now more than ever before.”

Rockstar’s focus remains on GTA 6, but these ports could keep fans engaged during the wait. The studio’s history with remasters is mixed—2021’s GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition faced backlash for bugs, leading to a 2022 report from Tez2 that GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption remasters were shelved. Recent website errors suggest a shift, possibly driven by GTA 6’s delay and strong sales of Red Dead Redemption 2. Take-Two’s May 2025 earnings call hinted at two remastered titles for fiscal 2024, with fans pointing to these games as likely candidates. The removal of the Liberty City Preservation Project mod in 2025 further supports the idea that Rockstar is clearing the way for an official GTA 4 release.

The GTA 4 port could address the PC version’s optimization issues, which have plagued players with crashes and dated visuals. A Switch 2 version, following Red Dead Redemption’s 2023 port, would tap into Nintendo’s growing market, though the console’s rumored PS4-level power may limit enhancements. For Red Dead Redemption 2, a next-gen update could finally deliver the performance fans have begged for, especially after recent Red Dead Online content like zombie events showed continued support. Both projects, if real, reflect Rockstar’s strategy to leverage their back catalog while GTA 6 dominates development resources. Until an official announcement, possibly around Take-Two’s August 2025 investor call, these remain compelling rumors for two of Rockstar’s most beloved titles.
