Silent Hill 2 Remake to Feature Nostalgic '90s Filter and Classic Elements
The upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2 will introduce a special throwback filter that adjusts the color grading to more closely resemble the original PlayStation 2 version of the game. Although the original Silent Hill 2 was released in 2001, Konami has named this feature the "90s filter," likely as a nod to the aesthetic that the series became known for, starting with the first game in 1999.
Fans have been keeping a close eye on the development of Silent Hill 2, as it is one of the most eagerly anticipated horror remakes since the highly successful Resident Evil 4. While there has been some skepticism about Bloober Team's previous work, early previews have impressed the community, and many fans are excited to see Konami seemingly reconnect with the roots of the series.
One of the ways Konami is appealing to fans’ nostalgia is through the "90s filter." The official Silent Hill Twitter account revealed the feature through a short video, showing the protagonist James Sunderland walking through the eerie streets of Silent Hill with the filter active. The filter alters the game's color palette to a grayish-brown tone, closely matching the look and atmosphere of the original Silent Hill for the PlayStation 1.
Silent Hill 2 Introduces Retro Visual Filter
Bloober Team has made several promises to long-time fans of the iconic horror series, especially as there was concern that the remake might not capture the essence of what made the original game so beloved. Not only will the new version maintain multiple endings, but the legendary composer of Silent Hill 2, Akira Yamaoka, is also returning to remake many of the fan-favorite tracks from the original soundtrack.
Horror remakes have become increasingly popular in recent years. The Dead Space reboot, for example, saw strong sales, and fans are eagerly awaiting more news about the next Resident Evil remake. While Bloober Team's previous games have received mixed reviews, early previews of Silent Hill 2 have generated considerable optimism.
Silent Hill isn't the only iconic franchise Konami is bringing back, as they are also preparing for the release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Similar to Silent Hill 2's retro filter, Metal Gear Solid Delta will include "legacy" options that recreate the look and feel of the original PlayStation 2 version, demonstrating Konami's commitment to reviving the nostalgia that fans cherish for these classic titles.
