Contract terms and minimum wages for VCT 2023 participants revealed
As the transfer window for VCT 2023 participants opened the day before, Riot Games is clarifying for organizations on the order in which contracts are awarded and the minimum wage. This means that featured teams can begin signing players to their roster before February 1, 2023, but Riot Games requires initial roster completion by October 15.
The contracts players will sign with clubs are referred to as "esports service agreements" according to Riot Games' official roster building rules.
Conditions for wages of participants of VCT 2023
Each international league has its own minimum annual salary for a team member, and each signed contract must be completed for at least one full season:
- America: $50,000 per year
- Europe: 50,000 euros per year
- Asia: 67,000,000 won per year
If a higher amount is required under the applicable laws of a particular country, then this figure is the minimum required. Teams may exceed the minimum, but potential bonuses do not count toward the minimum. The list does not include a maximum salary or team salary cap.
Previously, Riot Games introduced a set of rules for partner lineups in three leagues in Europe, America and Asia. According to these requirements, those teams that are represented in a particular region must field a squad of at least four players from the corresponding region.
In addition to the minimum wage, each contract must clearly state the amount for several types of additional payments or compensation, including signing bonuses, individual and team bonuses, payouts/broadcast payouts, advertising/sponsorship opportunities and perks.
Contract Requirements
Below is a list of requirements for partner organizations:
- Contracts are prohibited from including non-competitiveness or "right of first refusal" clauses preventing teams from blocking transfers or preventing players from joining other teams after the original contract expires
- Contracts are limited to four seasons, however they can be structured to have a base starting term plus an option that allows both parties to mutually agree to an additional season or seasons. This base term plus additional seasons still cannot exceed four seasons
- Contracts must include clauses prohibiting team members from agreeing matches, colluding or gambling in relation to matches on stage
- Contracts must include the option of terminating the agreement for either party in the event that the other party "commits a material breach" of the contract
