Cancelled BioShock Movie Details Shared By Director
Back in 2008, Universal Pictures announced a BioShock movie directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy), but the project was cancelled due to the high budget and R-rating that were too risky for the studio.
During the latest Reddit AMA session, Verbinski shared some details on the cancelled BioShock movie. Firstly, he stated that he really enjoyed the project and revealed some interesting information about how the movie could have been built. Specifically, it featured a “hard R-rating,” the inclusion of both endings, and many more, as you can check below:
"I loved this project when we were getting close to making it at Universal. I was going to dive deeply into the Oedipal aspect and definitely keep it hard R with the Little Sisters, and the 'choices' the protagonist makes… and the consequences. I had worked out a way with writer John Logan to have both endings and I was looking forward to bringing that to the big screen and really fucking with people’s heads. Had some great designs for the Big Daddies and the entire underwater demented art-deco aesthetic."
For now, it is confirmed BioShock will have an adaptation for Netflix, but it reportedly will be a small project, not a blockbuster. Speaking of a new BioShock video game, it’s confirmed to be in development but unlikely to be released soon.
