Qualcomm is planning its first foray into the consumer electronics market in recent years - with a device that closely resembles Nintendo's wildly popular Switch game console. The Android-based game console will attempt to showcase the company's Snapdragon chipsets in a less traditional form factor, according to a source familiar with the company's strategy.

According to reporters, the device is inspired by the Nintendo Switch and will be equipped with two removable controllers, while the center section, where the screen will be placed, can also be docked to the TV. The basis of the future device will be the latest processor line Qualcomm with support for 5G and Android 12. The console will be equipped with a 6,000 mAh battery, supporting fast charging technology.

There will also be an SD card slot for expandable storage. The console will run Android 12 with a custom launcher and full support for the Google Play suite of apps and services.

Qualcomm's current target is to launch the device in the first quarter of 2022, which means it will most likely be powered by the next generation of Snapdragon processor. On the distribution side, Qualcomm plans to offer direct sales to consumers, but also wants to use its connections with US carriers to hit store shelves.

According to insiders, the company expects the release of the console to help partners pay attention to new form factors that combine mobile and gaming devices. Reporters noted that Qualcomm may refuse to release a portable console, while representatives of the company refused to comment on the rumors at all.
