GTA 6 PC Release Could Move Up to Beat AI Rip-Offs, Says Ex-Rockstar Director

Obbe Vermeij, technical director at Rockstar North until 2009, thinks GTA 6’s PC version could land sooner than the mid-2027 forecasts, and generative AI is the reason.

Somebody points an AI tool at the PS5 build after 19th November, pushes out a rough PC port, and Rockstar loses sales it would rather keep. Vermeij does not claim to know what Rockstar is planning. He does think the cost of ripping off a game has collapsed.

Speaking to RockPaperShotgun, Vermeij said generative AI “really has changed the world”.

“I think I would be concerned, if I was Rockstar, that somebody would just take the PS5 version and get AI to change it to PC, which won’t be as good as their effort, but it could still also hurt their sales. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an effort to get a little bit closer together.”

He rates today’s tools as “probably” capable of the job, with a caveat about the bill.

“It will take a long time. It actually, physically takes hours and hours and hours to do these things. And it will take a bunch of tokens and everything, so it would probably cost like, tens of thousands of dollars in tokens. But like, you know, if it’s GTA, I think people are gonna try it.”

Tens of thousands of dollars sounds like a lot until you set it against what the game is already earning. Sensor Tower’s weekly tracker put GTA 6 at 7.71 million copies and $751 million in revenue with two weeks still to run, 74% of that on PlayStation. A clone that captures even a sliver of the PC audience is worth somebody’s token bill.

Rockstar has said nothing official about a PC version, though it has been teasing one via its launcher, where an Overlay V3 appeared carrying a Discord connection and references to Steam and Epic tabs. The published timelines disagree about what that means: GamesBeat reported a first-quarter 2027 window citing four people inside the studio, while Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has said six or seven months after console, which lands at the end of June.

PS5 emulation on PC has moved fast this year, but Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie expects GTA 6 won’t be playable on PS5 emulator, even though emulator developers will try the moment it ships. The game also demands PS5 firmware 14.22.00.00, a requirement Sony raised hours after shipping that update. That leaves AI porting as the fast lane, which is where Vermeij expects the trouble.

Rockstar prohibits spoilers covering the ending, isolated cutscenes and major story dialogue once the game is out, while leaving multi-hour playthroughs on YouTube and Twitch alone. A studio that writes rules for what you may upload from a finished game has a settled view on what should happen to its code.

Last week a batch of new screenshots revealed Vice City panoramas, crowds of NPCs and fresh looks at Jason and Lucia, published on Rockstar’s own site.

Fans stripped them for detail within a day, spotting Kodak Black’s appearance as an NPC and a mall robbery that resembles the 2012 Brent Cross job. The same images feed the other pipeline. AI slop videos built from GTA 6 footage have pulled millions of views, and Ars Technica covered people running the PS5 trailer through a stronger graphics card with Nvidia’s DLSS 5 to add gloss the game does not have yet.

Vermeij has watched the relationship between PC and console reverse once before. GTA 1 was built on PC and handed to an external company in Dundee for the PlayStation conversion, which came back with textures cut from 256 colours to 16 and an artist storming around the office. Rockstar flipped the order for GTA 3 and never flipped it back, partly because one version at a time is easier on a development team. Most publishers now ship everything at once to pay for a single marketing campaign; GTA has been big enough to ignore that logic.

Software such as Reverse Engineer Anything turns an unofficial port into a job you queue rather than a project you join, and experienced recomp developers warn the output is illegible bruteforce code that preserves nothing about how the original was built. GTA 6 cost hundreds of millions of dollars across eight years, and it ships without generative AI or microtransactions in it.

Vermeij left Rockstar in 2009 and makes his own games now, including an early access hex god sim called Plentiful that uses AI-assisted machine translation for localization and nothing else. He is not hostile to the technology, which makes his read on enforcement bleaker rather than softer. Smaller studios have already cancelled public demos over cloning fears, and Valve’s position is that originality is the developer’s problem to solve.

“I don’t really see how you could protect against that, to be honest. I don’t see it. But a big company like Take-Two, they would be able to get the lawyers on the case.”

— Obbe Vermeij

I think the lawyers matter less than the calendar here. If a PC port lands in six months instead of eighteen, the clone window closes on its own, and that is a call Rockstar can make without winning a single case.
