Ex-PlayStation CEO Reveals Why Bloodborne 2 or Remastered Version Never Happened

Among the FromSoftware fan community, many consider Bloodborne to be the studio’s best game, and they’re particularly surprised that, despite its success and widespread acclaim, no one has yet worked on a sequel or, for example, a PS5 remaster.

Shawn Layden may have provided the answer to this question. The former PlayStation boss recently appeared on The Trophy Room podcast, where he was asked about Bloodborne and why a sequel or remaster hasn’t been released yet. According to Layden, the issue primarily stems from legal complications involving not only Sony and FromSoftware but also the developers’ parent company, Kadokawa. You can read more about this below:

“Can you do something that is not only respectful of the original, but can you recreate the phenomenon. There’s a lot of involved rights associated with it. And something like that where Sony is in there, and FromSoftware is in there, and FROM’s parent company, Kadokawa, is in there, I think just getting everyone to sign off on everything is probably the biggest challenge there.”

Meanwhile, former PlayStation developer Brandon Sheffield had previously revealed that FromSoftware had rejected dozens of proposals for expanding the Bloodborne series —ideas that included a sequel, a spin-off, and a remake—and Sheffield himself, while working at Bluepoint Games, had proposed such an idea. And this move seemed logical, given that the studio had developed the remake of Demon’s Souls for the PlayStation 5—which is considered one of the best games of this generation. But, as Sheffield added, FromSoftware was unhappy with Demon’s Souls remake and therefore decided against making a Bloodborne remake.

The franchise will expand eventually: Sony is developing an animated film based on the franchise that will have an R rating. The project is being produced by Lyrical Animation in collaboration with popular YouTuber JackSepticEye.

Bloodborne is now available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation via the backwards compatibility.
