Don’t Expect GTA 6 to Be Playable on PC Via PS5 Emulator

Exactly two weeks remain until what may be the biggest event of recent years—the release of GTA 6 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. As usual, PC owners will have to wait at least a year—perhaps a little shorter—for the game to make its way to their platform. That said, some enthusiasts may try to run GTA 6 as soon as it becomes available using a PS5 emulator.

In recent months, lots of PlayStation exclusives, like Demon's Souls and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, have become playable on PC using emulators —even at 60 FPS. However, don't count on that being possible with GTA 6.

This was reported by experts at Digital Foundry in a recent episode of DF Direct Q+A. According to Oliver Mackenzie, PS5 emulator developers will almost certainly try to run GTA 6 as soon as the opportunity arises. However, given the technologies used in the game, it is unlikely that it will be in a playable state. Some members of Digital Foundry also discussed the game’s potential firmware requirements, which could pose another hurdle. Coincidentally, an insider and user named PlaystationSize, who specializes in console specifications, confirmed that GTA 6 will require a new firmware version—14.22.00.00. This poses additional challenges for attempts to run the game using an emulator, as hackers will need more time to find vulnerabilities.

GTA 6 will now require PS5 system software version 14.22.00.00 or later.

The requirement was raised from 14.10 just hours after Sony released the new update today, blocking jailbroken consoles on older firmware from running the game.

However, according to several reports, GTA 6 will release on PC by the middle of next year, and multiplayer may launch alongside this version.
