Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Officially Premieres on Netflix

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the second season of the anime set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, premiered on Netflix on October 20. Like the first season, it was created by CD Projekt RED together with Japanese animation studio Trigger. All 10 episodes dropped at once, so you can watch the whole season right now.

The new season is directed by Kai Ikarashi, with Kanno Ichigo handling character design. Members of the first season’s team also returned, including Masahiko Otsuka and Bartosz Sztybor, who served as showrunner, story writer, and producer. The second season was officially announced in July 2025, and four years have passed since the first season premiered in September 2022.

Season 2 doesn’t continue David Martinez and Lucy’s story, since the first season wrapped it up. Instead, it’s a standalone story about new characters whose fates intertwine in Night City. There are four main characters:

• Weak Kingsley – a former legendary mercenary known as King, who had all his implants removed after going cyberpsycho.
• D – a netrunner from a nomad clan who wants revenge on the people who wiped out his tribe.
• Talia Yang – a young woman from the corporate elite who replaced most of her body with cyberware because of an illness and ended up in the world of the Maelstrom gang.
• Roman Carax – a young film buff who wants to capture real stories in a city where braindances have replaced traditional cinema.

Unlike the first season, there’s no single clear protagonist. The story follows several characters and gradually leads them to a large-scale corporate conspiracy.

Early reviews are mostly positive, though opinions on the story are split. Most critics praise Trigger’s animation, the spectacular fight scenes, and the brutality that captures Night City’s atmosphere well. Reviewers call Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 a spectacular show with stunning fights and highlight the ambition of its multi-character story.

At the same time, some critics feel the second season doesn’t live up to the first. In their view, David Martinez’s tragedy in season one was more focused and hit harder, even though the new season expands the world.

Alongside the premiere, CD Projekt RED announced the free Edgerunners 2 Update (2.5) for Cyberpunk 2077, which arrives on October 22 and adds content inspired by the new anime.
