Nightcrawler, Open-Zone Areas, Environmental Destruction and More Marvel’s Wolverine Cut Content Revealed

There's less than a month left until Marvel's Wolverine, Insomniac's next project, launches exclusively on PlayStation 5. As is well known, the game's been delayed a few times and was originally set for a much earlier release. Meanwhile, a new report has surfaced revealing not just the original launch date but plenty of details the developers ultimately cut during production, some of which might disappoint fans.

Reddit users have gone back to the big 2023 Insomniac leak in search of interesting Marvel's Wolverine details, comparing its contents against what's known about the game now. It reportedly shows the game was originally slated for Q4 2024, with its first teaser planned to appear alongside Marvel's Spider-Man 2, an idea that got scrapped along the way. The cut gameplay details are far more interesting, though. Wolverine was originally meant to control his claws using the left and right triggers, and he also had access to an upgradeable crossbow. One of Logan's planned allies was Nightcrawler, later swapped for Jubilee and eventually Tyger Tiger. The locations were reportedly bigger in scale too, with more destructible environments. You can dig into these and other cut details below:

Marvel’s Wolverine reportedly had a LOT more planned features that were later cut:

  • Separate left/right trigger claw controls with adaptive trigger feedback
  • A Wolverine crossbow with different arrow types, crafting & upgrades
  • More extensive environmental destruction
  • Open-zone areas
  • Nightcrawler was originally planned as Logan’s Madripoor ally before being replaced by Jubilee and eventually Tyger Tiger
  • A cloaking enemy designed around Wolverine’s enhanced senses
  • A bear boss fight using assets from God of War Ragnarök
  • A planned Wolverine teaser in Spider-Man 2 that was ultimately scrapped
  • The game was reportedly targeting Q4 2024 internally before being delayed

This is likely far from everything Insomniac trimmed during development. Earlier leaks also claimed Jean Grey would be a second playable character, something one of the recent trailers seemed to hint at, but the studio has since reconfirmed Logan is the only character you'll control. The developers have also shared new info recently, covering PS5 technical specs, gameplay features, character details, and more. Gaming outlets have also weighed in with early impressions, praising the combat system in particular, along with the emotional story that reveals Logan's more human side.

Meanwhile, IMDb has revealed Marvel's Spider-Man 3 is officially in production, though the studio hasn't made any announcement of its own yet. The listing names Bryan Intihar and Ryan Smith as game directors, with Yuri Lowenthal returning to voice Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
