Gaming Journalists Shared Their Previews on Marvel’s Wolverine—Combat System and Logan’s Story Praised
On August 13, the embargo lifted on early reviews of Marvel's Wolverine, the new PlayStation 5 exclusive from Insomniac Games coming out next month. The project's generating considerable interest, not just among Marvel fans but also among anyone who loves linear games with a spectacular combat system, charismatic characters, and a gripping story. And judging by early reactions, that seems to be exactly what the game delivers, with a few caveats.
GameSpot, for instance, in it's preview noted Marvel's Wolverine feels like a serious action game, though the combat system sometimes lacks variety, particularly during fights against large groups of enemies. The Verge seemingly compared Marvel's Wolverine to God of War (2018), pointing to its intense combat and, in particular, the Rage mode. The story, which explores Logan from a more human angle, also earned praise. In their previews Deadline and GamesRadar+ have similarly noted that Insomniac focused on emotional storytelling and spectacular combat, agreeing that Marvel's Wolverine plays as a serious portrait of Logan rather than just another superhero game. The main drawbacks so far seem to be a combat system that occasionally stumbles and a lack of anything radically new from the studio.
Shortly before the official embargo, Eurogamer revealed some similar impressions of Marvel's Wolverine; their review also discussed the combat system at length, whilst also touching on stealth. Be that as it may, Marvel’s Wolverine still looks set to be one of the most intriguing projects of the year, and it will be interesting to see to what extent the final reviews live up to these early impressions.
Meanwhile, IMDb has revealed Marvel's Spider-Man 3 is officially in production, though the studio hasn't made any announcement of its own yet. The listing names Bryan Intihar and Ryan Smith as game directors, with Yuri Lowenthal returning to voice Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
Marvel’s Wolverine will release on September 15 exclusively for PlayStation 5.
