Lots of Marvel’s Wolverine Details Unveiled—Combat, Characters, New Game+, Technical Specs, and More

There's just over a month left until Marvel's Wolverine launches, the new game from Insomniac and one of this year's biggest PlayStation 5 exclusives. As that date gets closer, the developers have shared new details covering nearly every aspect of the project, from the technical side to gameplay and story.

Perhaps the biggest news for PlayStation 5 owners is that Marvel's Wolverine will run at 60 FPS with ray tracing. Senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed confirmed this during the IGN dialogue, claiming the team set that as a goal from the start and was thrilled to hit it. In the same interview, Reiner-Reed and Insomniac head of technology Mike Fitzgerald went into more detail on the game's features, confirming there'll be plenty to do even after finishing the main story. For instance, there'll be a mission replay mode letting players jump back into specific sections if they missed collectibles or want to replay in a different costume, along with a New Game+ mode available from launch. Insomniac Games has also introduced what it calls "Nightmare Doors," described as “manifestations of the horrible things happening in Logan’s mind.”

The studio also reconfirmed Logan remains the only playable character, putting any Jean Grey rumors to rest, though team dynamics will play a big role in the game—Sabretooth, for instance, reportedly goes out of his way to stop Wolverine from landing a finishing move. On the cast side, Nathaniel Essex, aka Mister Sinister, voiced by Troy Baker, leads Team X alongside Wolverine, Sabretooth, and Mystique. Meanwhile, Kelly Hu, who previously played Lady Deathstrike in X2, is voicing Tyger Tiger.

Alongside the developer details, the game's first early reviews from various outlets have also started coming in following the August 13 embargo lift. Critics have generally praised the emotional story and spectacular combat system, though several noted a lack of major innovation from Insomniac.

Meanwhile, IMDb has revealed Marvel's Spider-Man 3 is officially in production, though the studio hasn't made any announcement of its own yet. The listing names Bryan Intihar and Ryan Smith as game directors, with Yuri Lowenthal returning to voice Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Marvel’s Wolverine will release on September 15 exclusively for PlayStation 5.
