Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Sold 316,000 Copies During the Brand New Day Window

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sold an estimated 316,000 copies in the twelve days after Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in cinemas on July 30, worth about $11m to Sony across PS5 and Steam. The figures come from Alinea Analytics' Rhys Elliott, who tracks daily copies sold against store pricing. Another 274,000 people started the game for the first time through PlayStation Plus, where it sits in the Extra tier, and roughly 20% of the PS5 copies bought during the film window were physical discs.

Over the weekend, the game passed one million daily active users for the first time since launch week, nearly three years ago. Elliott puts film-window engagement at about 2.6 times what Spider-Man 2 was doing daily before Brand New Day opened. Sherif Saed at Eurogamer files the lift next to what the Netflix series did for CD Projekt's Witcher games.

The same discount ran twice, which is what makes the jump readable. On PS5 the film-window sale price was $29.39, the exact figure Sony used in a February promotion. February moved around 6,300 copies a day. The film window moved around 15,000, an average of 2.4 times the February rate and 4.5 times on the strongest day. Steam repeated the pattern: at a flat $40.19, the film window sold 2.3 times what the same $40.19 discount did in June.

"This is one of the clearest transmedia halo effects we've ever measured."

Insomniac put something into the game before the premiere. A new suit called Fresh Start, modelled on the costume Tom Holland wears in Brand New Day, arrived on July 28. The borrowing ran both ways. Brand New Day puts Holland back as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, and director Destin Daniel Cretton says the film was inspired by Insomniac's Spider-Man games. His stunt performers brought screenshots from the games onto set to work out moves.

"I'm not a huge gamer, but I have played the games. We definitely looked at them."

Lifetime, Spider-Man 2 sits at 18.2 million copies by Alinea's estimate, more than 92% of them on PS5, and past $1.2 billion in revenue.

Those 274,000 first-time players bought nothing. Spider-Man 2 is in the Extra tier, so anyone with a subscription could open it at no extra cost, which is why Elliott counts them apart from the 316,000 copies.

Insomniac has spent more than a decade on Spider-Man and is stepping off it. Marvel's Wolverine arrives September 15 exclusively on PS5, without an open world and with a heavier, more brutal combat system, and the studio has confirmed Spider-Man will not appear, not even in a cameo. I own a PS5, and what pulls people back into Spider-Man 2 is the swinging rather than the plot, which is why I don't expect Wolverine to catch a lift like this one even with the X-Men turning up in Avengers: Doomsday in December.

The other number worth watching is the disc share. Twenty percent of film-window PS5 copies were physical, which suggests the audience the film sent over is not the audience already paying for PlayStation Plus every month. I think publishers will read that as proof the discounts worked, when it looks more like people who buy two or three games a year and only when something outside games tells them to.

Elliott's own takeaway is that none of this was planned. Brand New Day landed almost three years after the game, and lining up a film with a game on purpose means syncing two multi-year productions that both slip. Marvel's Venom is reported for 2027 with Eddie Brock as the lead and Carnage as a major villain, and insiders place Marvel's Spider-Man 3 on PlayStation 6 around 2028, either cross-generation or exclusive to the new console. Sony has said it will support PS5 until 2030 at minimum. I think 2028 is the first window where somebody could try that alignment deliberately, and the Brand New Day numbers are the argument they will use to justify it.
