Fortnite's Odyssey Cup Hands Out a Free Matt Damon Skin Two Days Before Nolan's Film Opens

Fortnite runs the Odyssey Cup on July 15 and 16, a free tournament that pays out an Odysseus outfit modeled on Matt Damon's lead role in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which opens in theaters July 17. Players who miss the cutoff can buy the same skin in the Item Shop starting July 17 at 8 PM ET. The free window closes the day the movie premieres, which is the whole point of the schedule.

Entry works through the Compete tab in the lobby, with two-factor authentication required on the Epic account. The cup runs in Battle Royale, Zero Build, and a Reload-mode Mobile variant, and points come from placement plus eliminations: a top-10 finish nets around 20-25 points depending on kills. Rewards stack across five tiers, from a loading screen and a 40-point spray up to the Odysseus outfit itself. The skin goes to the top 1,000 players in Europe, top 700 in NA Central, top 200 in NA West and Brazil, and top 100 in Oceania, Asia, and the Middle East, with smaller pools on Mobile. Placement matters more than fighting here, so playing for survival beats hunting eliminations, at least until the endgame.

The cup lands in a crowded week for Fortnite crossovers. Epic's Batman-themed DC Summer event starts July 16, one day into the Odyssey Cup, and the studio is also bringing Marvel's Absolute Doom Battle Pass skins back to the Item Shop under its 18-month return policy. Three licensed universes, one week.

I think the free-then-paid structure is the cleverest part of the Odyssey deal, since the tournament turns tens of thousands of players into walking movie ads during opening weekend while everyone who missed the cutoff becomes an Item Shop customer on premiere day. I'd also note what Hollywood now sees in Fortnite: a marketing slot that Warner Bros., DC, and Marvel all booked in the same seven days, each paying to stand out on the same island.
