Insider Revealed Difficulties During the Development of New Ghost Recon and Far Cry Titles

In their recent financial report, Ubisoft confirmed that the next installments of their flagship franchises—Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Ghost Recon—are scheduled for release by 2029, which indicates that their development is actively underway. However, the company is currently facing internal challenges that are directly impacting the ongoing production of these key projects.

Reliable gaming insider Tom Henderson, who has previously shared leaks about upcoming Ubisoft titles, has released a new report on the development of the next Ghost Recon installment. According to information apparently sourced from a developer involved in the project, the game—codenamed Project OVR— "failed to meet internal Alpha objectives" and has suffered from "unrealistic deadlines and poor planning and management." It is also mentioned that the game still has a solid foundation, but if things continue to deteriorate, the development could be restarted or the project might even be cancelled altogether.

Henderson also shared some insights about the production of Far Cry 7—and things aren't going smoothly there either. On his social media page, the insider revealed that the game's development is going terribly; he had previously mentioned that the project is going through a development hell.

Will also add that the next mainline Far Cry game development has also been abysmal.

This situation is not surprising, considering that Ubisoft announced a major restructuring earlier this year, which resulted in significant staff layoffs and the cancellation of numerous projects—including the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Furthermore, just this week, it was revealed that two divisions, Ubisoft Winnipeg and Ubisoft Belgrade, are being closed, along with cuts at Ubisoft Barcelona and Ubisoft San Francisco.

This year, Ubisoft plans to release two projects, both of which are remakes: Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and Rayman Legends: Retold.

Rumor has it that Far Cry 7 will take players to Alaska and is set to release in 2027, while the new Ghost Recon installment will draw inspiration from Ready or Not and shift the franchise's setting to Asia. According to a recent insider report, the release is tentatively scheduled for 2028—but given Ubisoft’s current unstable situation, this date could still change several times.
