Ubisoft Closed Two Studios and Announced a New Wave of Layoffs as Part of Restructuring

Ubisoft continues its large-scale restructuring campaign, announced earlier this year, and this time the changes appear significant, as the company has announced the closure of two divisions along with numerous layoffs.

Insider Gaming portal has released an exclusive report revealing that the latest phase of Ubisoft’s restructuring has impacted the jobs of around 380 employees. Although the information did not surface immediately, the following details are now known:

  • Ubisoft Winnipeg —the studio has been closed, resulting in layoffs of 65 employees who worked on Rainbow Six Siege, XDefiant, Far Cry 6, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
  • Ubisoft Belgrade —this studio has also been shut down, with around 100 staff members laid off. The team contributed to the development of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Wildlands, The Crew 2, Rainbow Six, and Skull & Bones.
  • Ubisoft Barcelona —the studio remains open, but over 50 employees have been let go.
  • Ubisoft San Francisco —this studio is still operating, although between 50 and 100 employees have been laid off.

The source is also adding that about 12% of the Ubisoft Montreal team working on Rainbow Six Siege will be removed from the project, along with 50 employees involved with Rainbow Six Siege Mobile and one unannounced project. Their future is currently uncertain, but these changes do not involve layoffs.

It is clear that such changes, including studio closures and employee layoffs, will impact the development of upcoming projects. In recent months, Ubisoft’s situation has deteriorated, and it remains uncertain how long it will take for the company to regain its top position following the restructuring.

This year, Ubisoft plans to release two projects, both of which are remakes: Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and Rayman Legends: Retold. In addition, significant work is underway on the next mainline Assassin's Creed title, codenamed Hexe, as well as Far Cry 7 and a new Ghost Recon. According to a recently published financial report, all these games are expected to launch by 2029.
