Rebel Wolves Is Already Working On a Sequel to The Blood of Dawnwalker

Last week's Summer Game Fest event delighted gamers with announcements of new titles such as Resident Evil Veronica, TMNT: The Last Ronin, SAW: Genesis, and many others, while also revealing more details about previously known projects. One of these was The Blood of Dawnwalker—a forthcoming large-scale RPG from Rebel Wolves, the team behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, led by one of its former game directors, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz.

In addition to a trailer showcasing new gameplay footage, the developers released a clip that clearly hints at the studio's plans to further expand The Blood of Dawnwalker and turn it into a franchise. As is known, the game's story takes place in 14th-century Europe, but we also see scenes set in a modern environment featuring the main character, Coen, who is still alive and in need of fresh blood—at least until a new threat catches up with him.

In a recent interview with Polygon, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz shed some light on the situation and confirmed that the modern-day scene is actually a post-credits sequence in The Blood of Dawnwalker. He also revealed that the studio aims to build an entire game universe spanning hundreds of years of stories, with player choices from the original game having consequences in future installments—a bold claim considering the first part is only set to release this September. You can find key highlights from Tomaszkiewicz's interview below:

“We knew that it would be a saga. You know this way that we have a high-level story which we will tell through all parts of the game, which will lead to the modern times. It’s also an invitation and the promise for players that we will go through it together, through the different eras, different countries, different legends, different myths, and different species of the night. Different vampires, maybe?

Whichever choice the players make, you have to make it a satisfying choice. I’m a big fan of failing forward, so even if you do something that is not a great attune for the character, you still get some bit of lore or some story bit that will be interesting to you. It is challenging, of course. There are so many branches, and within so many branches in the story we’re testing the quests and playing them and seeing and iterating them.

For us inside, it also has a meaning because it gives us the direction and the signposts of where we are going with the team. I knew from experience that when you work a lot on one IP, you can burn out or be tired after that. We searched really hard for a way to not lead to that situation… We thought in our case, it will be moving to different eras to expand the feature list to tell different stories, explore different lessons, and the history of different countries.”

Another key feature of The Blood of Dawnwalker is that players will have only 30 in-game days and nights to complete the main storyline, with time advancing after each completed quest. This means players will need to carefully choose how to spend their time. The developers favored this approach to encourage multiple playthroughs. Additionally, Rebel Wolves confirmed that immediately after finishing the game's prologue, players can face the main antagonist, Brencis, by going to the designated location on the map.
