The Elder Scrolls VI Was Announced 8 Years Ago - And Still Shrouded in Mystery
Gamers often enjoy reminiscing about key dates related to their favorite games, whether its anniversaries marking the release or the originally planned launch dates—like May 26, 2026, which was the initial release date for GTA 6. Unfortunately, not all of these moments bring positive feelings.
For example, today, June 10, 2026, marks exactly eight years since Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls VI during their presentation at E3 2018. The trailer was accompanied by epic music and hinted that the game would be, if not the biggest, then certainly one of the most expansive RPGs in history. Unfortunately, that teaser is all Bethesda has revealed about The Elder Scrolls VI so far; the game still has no release date, no confirmed platforms, and no details about gameplay or story.
Holding our breath in hopes of learning something new about The Elder Scrolls VI, Bethesda boss Todd Howard gave fans an unusual piece of advice back in March: just pretend the game hasn't actually been announced. Since then, the studio hasn’t shared any updates about the game, which suggests one thing—The Elder Scrolls VI’s development is clearly facing challenges. The game's absence from last week’s Summer Game Fest and Xbox Game Showcase only reinforces this impression.
Nevertheless, a breath of fresh air comes from Xbox Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, who recently visited Bethesda’s office and said that The Elder Scrolls VI looks amazing. He also assured that the studio will definitely showcase the game when the time is right, as you can see below:
XBOX Chief Content Officer on The Elder Scrolls VI:
"Having visited Bethesda and sat with Todd and seen Elder Scrolls playing, it looks amazing, and it’s coming along well. And we’ll make sure to announce it and really reveal it at the right time."
Despite the lack of official news, rumors about The Elder Scrolls VI have regularly surfaced. In particular, it has been suggested that the game’s events will take place in the regions of Hammerfell and High Rock. Players are expected to be able to visit more than 10 major cities, and sea voyages—similar to the spaceship travels in Starfield—will play a key role in the gameplay. However, the release is unlikely to happen before 2028 or 2029.
