GTA 6 Might Sell 45 Million Copies In First Week, Similar to Success of Mario Kart for Switch

There is no doubt that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, the latest entry from Rockstar Games that is set to release this November, might be one of the best, if not the best-selling game of all time. The game’s budget is reportedly huge, bigger than it was officially mentioned, and Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of the developing studio, is making a huge bet on the upcoming project.

We heard some reports that GTA 6 needs to make something crazy in terms of financial indicators, as Bloomberg recently revealed that selling 10 million copies on launch day will not be a satisfactory result for Take-Two —it needs to be around 20-25 million. However, the director of publishing at Larian, Michael Douse, shared his point of view about this, and according to him, Rockstar Games’ title could easily sell around 45 million copies in the first week and become the version of “Mario Kart for Switch” but for PlayStation 5, as you can check out below:

“It's going to be what Mario Kart for Switch is, but GTA6 for PS5. I wouldn't be surprised if it hits 50% of the 90+ mil PS5s in a week. That said, player behavior is very different to when GTA5 launched. So is buying power.”

We do remember that its predecessor, GTA 5, when it got released in 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, showed tremendous success: $800 million in its first 24 hours and reached $1 billion in three days, selling approximately 11–13 million copies of the game. Grand Theft Auto VI is already seemingly exceeding the expectations of the fifth installment, will be an even more ambitious project, and has a game budget preliminarily ten times bigger than that of the previous installment.

Rockstar Games is actively preparing for the start of GTA 6’s marketing campaign, which is scheduled for this summer, and they already started to produce some physical promotional materials—including posters and billboards—to use them in New York. Furthermore, Take-Two is scheduled to hold its next financial results briefing on May 21, which is giving the fans hope to receive official new information or perhaps a new trailer for GTA 6 soon.

At the same time, according to gaming insider DetectiveSeeds, we will see multiple trailers for Grand Theft Auto VI —first on Rockstar Games' own platforms and subsequently at a PlayStation event, courtesy of their partnership with Take-Two. This may happen as early as the next State of Play, which is reportedly scheduled for late May or early June.
