Grand Theft Auto VI Might Be the Most Leaked Video Game in History
The first trailer of Grand Theft Auto VI was revealed on December 5, 2023, and 1.5 years later, Rockstar Games published another one—on May 6, 2025. While gamers are waiting for a new stream of official information about the upcoming title, the number of leaks surrounding GTA 6 has reached an enormous number—and it’s unlikely to decrease.
Especially, it was a hard day for Rockstar Games on April 11, when hacker group ShinyHunters gained access to the developers' database and threatened to release the information if they did not pay the ransom by April 14. At the same time, developers reacted and confirmed the fact of hacking attacks by commenting that “a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach” and it “has no impact on our organization or our players.” After such a tremendous incident, X social media GTA 6 Countdown has decided to remember all the leaks related to Grand Theft Auto IV, which span nearly a decade, and in case you didn’t know something, you can check out all the information below:
- The very first leak happened in May 2016, when a 4chan user leaked the first legit details about Rockstar’s plan to have a male/female protagonist duo and a Florida setting;
- In March 2018, Inside Gaming was the first media outlet to leak details about the game’s setting and female protagonist;
- June 2021: Gaming insider Tom Henderson reported that the game will be in a modern setting rather than the initial 1980s setting;
- July 2022: Jason Schreier leaked Rockstar Games’ plan to scale down Project Americas to just Miami and its surroundings and the Bonnie/Clyde-themed story;
- September 2022: a hacker, TeaPot, leaked 90 clips, an hour of pre-alpha footage, and the source code;
- More than a year later, the next leak happened in October 2023. Specifically, it was about details on the game’s prologue/introduction that were leaked by a Reddit user in addition to other story details;
- November 2023: Jason Schreier leaked Rockstar’s plan to reveal Trailer 1 in December to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary a day before the official announcement;
- December 2nd, 2023: The friend of Aaron Garbut’s son leaked a clip showing the city. Aaron Garbut is the current head of development at Rockstar North and co-studio head;
- December 4th, 2023: Full GTA 6 trailer leaked on X;
- March 2024: Kotaku reported that the game might slip into 2026 due to production falling behind;
- May 2024: LegacyKilla leaked Jason and Lucia’s voice actors (Manni Perez and Dylan Rourke);
- April 2025: Jason and Lucia’s full names leaked on X a month before they were revealed in Trailer 2;
- November 2025: Following the delay to November 19, Tom Henderson said the game is content-ready and no other delay is expected;
- January 2026: Jason Schreier said the game isn’t content-complete, but he believes the November 19 release date feels more than the previous ones;
- March 2026: The hacker TeaPot obtained a phone while in prison and was surprised the source code hadn't leaked yet, stating that it’s out there;
Given that we still have several months until the game’s release, we might expect more leaks of Grand Theft Auto VI to appear. For instance, the latest one demonstrates early footage in a strip club and car chase, which was revealed by the game’s leaker, Golden, on his X social media page.
