Popular Resident Evil 3 Theory Debunked by The Game’s Director
Resident Evil Code: Veronica is the fourth installment of the franchise, released in back in the year of 2000. The game features siblings Chris and Claire Redfield, and takes place three months after the events of Resident Evil 2.
However, some fans have been thinking the game was initially a third game in the series, but the fact Sony had exclusive rights on Resident Evil 3 and Code: Veronica was an exclusive for Sega Dreamcast, we had a different title. Well, that theory recently got debunked, as Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya explained everything on X social media.
Resident Evil Code: Veronica was always the game we know and was never planned as the third game of the franchise, he confirmed. Kamiya also clarifies Resident Evil 3 was initially a spin-off, but Yoshiki Okamoto, the game’s producer, decided to make it the third game—and Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil, didn’t like that idea. He also stated all of this is not related to Sony. A tweet from Hideki Kamiya you can check below:
Most modern Resident Evil fans may not be familiar with Resident Evil Code: Veronica, but they can make it in 2027, when, according to a recent insider’s report, Capcom is planning to release the remake of the game.
At the same time, the newest Resident Evil installment, Resident Evil Requiem, will release on February 27, 2026 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
