Digimon: Source Code Is Shutting Down — A Disappointing End to a Short-Lived Title

Digimon: Source Code is officially closing its doors, marking an unfortunate end for a game many fans hoped would eventually receive a global release. The developers have confirmed that all services will cease on January 26, 2026, bringing the game’s brief run in China to a close.

According to the announcement, the title will be removed from all platforms on November 26, 2025. Starting from that date, players will no longer be able to download the game, register new accounts, create characters, or make in-game purchases. Two months later, on January 26, the servers will shut down permanently.

A Long Buildup, but Little Payoff

For longtime followers, this news hits especially hard because Digimon: Source Code had a lengthy pre-launch trajectory. The game held its first closed beta in China back in December 2021, followed by an appearance at ChinaJoy 2023.

The full mobile release didn’t arrive until April 2025, and even then, the launch remained exclusive to China. Developed by Bandai Namco Shanghai in partnership with Kingnet, and officially licensed by Toei Animation, the game showed potential—at least on paper.

A Concept With Interesting Ideas

Despite its struggles, Digimon: Source Code attempted to bring something fresh to the franchise. At its core, it was a turn-based RPG, enhanced with free exploration and light idle mechanics to streamline progression. One of its standout features was the ability to explore without stamina restrictions—something fans often praise in mobile RPGs.

Why the Shutdown Isn’t Exactly a Surprise

While disappointing, the shutdown doesn’t come out of nowhere. Players began expecting this outcome months ago due to the game’s poor financial performance, even though it had been on the market for less than half a year.

With declining revenue and limited regional availability, the game simply couldn’t sustain itself.
