Star Wars Strategy Game Leak Shows XCOM-Like Gameplay
If you’ve ever dreamed of commanding squads of Clone Troopers in intense, turn-based battles like XCOM, your dream might be coming true. A leaked batch of images from an artist’s portfolio has given fans a glimpse at an upcoming Star Wars strategy game, and it looks like a match made in tactical gaming heaven. Developed by Bit Reactor, a studio led by ex-Firaxis developer Greg Foerstch, this game has been rumored since 2022, but this is the first time we’ve seen any real visual evidence of what to expect.

The leaked images show gameplay that strongly resembles XCOM, featuring an isometric view and turn-based squad combat. The interface also showcases mechanics familiar to fans of strategy games, such as Overwatch (which allows units to fire during the enemy’s movement phase) and a free movement system similar to Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. While it’s unclear if the game will include permadeath or a similar high-stakes mechanic like XCOM, the general design screams tactical depth and strategic gameplay.

The game remains officially unannounced, but leaks suggest it will be unveiled at the upcoming Star Wars Celebration event in Japan on April 19. The screenshots, which appear to be mock-ups rather than actual in-game footage, were discovered in an artist’s online portfolio and seem to be over a year old. However, they give us a solid idea of what Bit Reactor has been working on and what we can expect when the official reveal drops.
The setting appears to be during the Clone Wars era, featuring Phase II Clone Troopers and Mandalorians with Nite Owl insignias. While there’s no confirmation on story details, this suggests a focus on ground combat and elite squad missions rather than space battles.

Star Wars games have had a rocky history. While titles like Jedi: Survivor and Spider-Man 2 have been massive hits, other high-budget games, like Marvel’s Avengers and Midnight Suns, failed to meet sales expectations despite positive reviews. Ubisoft’s upcoming Star Wars Outlaws also faces skepticism, and the cancellation of Star Wars Hunters only adds to the uncertainty.

However, a turn-based strategy game might be the perfect fit for the Star Wars universe. XCOM’s tactical gameplay has a devoted fanbase, and blending that with one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all time could create something special. If executed well, this could be the strategy game that finally brings the best of Star Wars combat to life.
Wait for the Reveal
With its official unveiling expected in April, it won’t be long before we get a real look at this project. Until then, fans of tactical combat can only speculate about what kind of missions, characters, and strategies will be included. Whether it leans into hardcore strategy like XCOM or offers a more casual experience like Mario + Rabbids, this game is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting Star Wars projects in years. Stay tuned for more updates!
