The Upcoming Mortal Kombat II Could Become the Best Franchise Adaptation Ever

Mortal Kombat II, the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat adaptation, is set to premiere this May; unlike the original movie, where the new character, Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, was the lead, the sequel cast Karl Urban in a starring role, who portrays the iconic Mortal Kombat hero, Johnny Cage.

As we know, Cage was absent from Mortal Kombat (2021), but his inevitable debut was teased at the end of the movie. During the recent interview with CBR, Urban shared his excitement over Mortal Kombat II and even revealed it could be the best movie adaptation of the franchise, as you can check out his words below:

“It was a fantastic experience. I'm so excited for you guys to see Mortal Kombat 2. We showed a little bit of it at New York Comic-Con and I've never experienced anything like it in terms of crowd reaction response. I think they'll be happy. I think that it's probably, to my mind, the best video game adaptation that's gone to film yet. So, I mean this, let's be honest, there's been a few that haven't quite, but this one fires and fires in a really good way. So, I can't wait for you all to see it.”

Although Mortal Kombat II is set to release this year and there are not even early predictions for its box office, the third installment of Mortal Kombat movie was confirmed last October, with the script, written by Jeremy Slater, already seeming to be ready. Hopefully, Mortal Kombat II will have a proper box-office run; for comparison, Mortal Kombat (2021) has grossed about $82 million worldwide with a $55 million budget, which wasn’t great for Warner Bros.

Except for Karl Urban, who plays Johnny Cage, the cast of Mortal Kombat II also includes Ludi Lin (Lui Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Joe Taslim (Bi-Han/Noob Saibot), Hiroyuki Sanada (Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion), Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Tati Gabriele (Jade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn), Tadanobu Asano (Lord Raider), CJ Bloomfield (Baraka), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), and more.
