Uber CEO Wants Tesla Robotaxi Rides on the Uber App
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has proposed that Tesla integrate its future robotaxi service into the Uber platform, suggesting that users could book self-driving Teslas via the Uber app. This idea follows the path set by Waymo, which already offers autonomous rides in Austin and Atlanta through Uber. Khosrowshahi made this suggestion during an interview with Stratechery, where he compared it to McDonald's, which, despite having its own app, still partners with delivery services like Uber Eats and DoorDash to extend its reach.
Tesla, known for its ambitious plans and frequent delays, is expected to launch its robotaxi business in Austin in June. The service will use Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y EVs. However, it faces challenges, including regulatory hurdles and the fact that Tesla has often missed deadlines in the past. Tesla's larger, long-term plans include its Cybercab and Robovan robotaxis, which are not expected to hit production until 2026 or 2027.

While Tesla has already previewed its robotaxi models, Elon Musk recently downplayed the timeline, describing the rollout as a cautious, step-by-step process. Musk emphasized safety and noted that they would initially test the service in limited areas before expanding. The launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi service would mark a significant step in the transition to fully autonomous vehicles, a move that many believe will reshape the ride-hailing industry.
Uber, on the other hand, already has 150,000 drivers using Teslas, making it a natural fit for Tesla's self-driving technology. Khosrowshahi sees it as an opportunity for Tesla to expand its reach without building its own app from scratch. He argued that working with Uber could be more cost-effective, as the company already has a robust platform and global user base.

If Tesla chooses not to partner with Uber, Khosrowshahi believes other automakers, such as General Motors and their Cruise division, will. GM has been making strides in autonomous vehicle development, and its Cruise technology is expected to integrate into GM vehicles soon.
This partnership proposal isn't just about economic benefits but also competition. Khosrowshahi acknowledged the significant technological advancements Tesla has made in autonomous driving, stating that no one would want to compete directly with the company if they could avoid it. At the same time, Khosrowshahi is confident that his charm and the financial incentives will convince Tesla to join forces with Uber. If not, he’s open to a direct channel approach.
Tesla’s robotaxi ambitions, despite their delays, are poised to have a lasting impact on the ride-hailing industry. As companies like Uber and Waymo continue to expand their autonomous fleets, it’s clear that the future of transportation is rapidly shifting toward self-driving vehicles. With Tesla leading the charge, it remains to be seen whether Uber will manage to bring Tesla’s robotaxis into the fold or if the two companies will follow their separate paths. Regardless, the push for autonomy in ride-hailing continues to evolve at a fast pace, with significant implications for the future of transportation worldwide.
