A remaster of 2019’s atmospheric detective game, The Sinking City, has been rated in Taiwan, hinting at an upcoming release. In early 2023, Frogwares regained full publishing and distribution control of the game, just in time to officially announce The Sinking City 2.

According to Gematsu on Twitter, The Sinking City Remastered has been recently rated in Taiwan for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The rating description states that the remaster is upgrading the game from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5. However, a strange listing date of February 14, 2025, has led to speculation—most likely indicating the document’s publication date rather than an actual launch.

Why an Unreal Engine 5 Remaster Could Make Sense

Although The Sinking City already received next-gen enhancements for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021, a full Unreal Engine 5 remaster could be Frogwares’ way of building hype for The Sinking City 2. A full-fledged remaster would attract far more attention than simply pointing to the 2021 updates. Given that the original didn’t make a significant splash in 2019, a remaster could boost the franchise’s visibility ahead of the sequel’s planned 2025 release.
