A Ghost of Tsushima Anime is Coming to Crunchyroll in 2027
Sony and PlayStation Productions are set to bring the immersive world of Ghost of Tsushima to life in an entirely new way: an anime adaptation. Slated to debut exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027, this marks the first time a PlayStation Studios game will be adapted into an anime.
Ghost of Tsushima is a critically acclaimed action-adventure game by Sucker Punch Productions, set in feudal Japan during the Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island. Players step into the role of Jin Sakai, a samurai torn between upholding his honorable warrior code and embracing stealthier, unconventional tactics to protect his homeland. Featuring a sprawling open world that can be explored on foot or horseback, the game offers dynamic combat options, from intense katana duels to stealth assassinations. Influenced by samurai cinema and Japanese mythology, Ghost of Tsushima combines stunning visuals, authentic cultural details, and a compelling narrative.
The series will focus on the Legends co-op multiplayer mode of the game, delving into its rich, mythological themes inspired by Japanese folklore. Produced in collaboration with Aniplex, known for hits like Demon Slayer and Sword Art Online, the anime promises to be a visual and narrative spectacle. Directed by Takanobu Mizuno and with a story composition by Gen Urobuchi, the series will feature animation by Kamikaze Douga, the studio behind JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Sony Music joins as the strategic partner for the soundtrack, ensuring a powerful and atmospheric score.
Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll, expressed his excitement: “The Ghost of Tsushima anime will offer fans an exciting new way to experience the game in an anime style that will be bold and groundbreaking.” Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, echoed this enthusiasm, noting how Ghost of Tsushima's immersive world and Legends mode provide a perfect foundation for this adaptation.
Ghost of Tsushima, originally released in 2020, follows samurai Jin Sakai as he fights to protect Tsushima Island during the Mongol invasion of Japan. The game was lauded for its combat, stunning visuals, and narrative depth, selling over 13 million copies across platforms. Its Legends multiplayer mode launched later, introduced fantastical elements drawn from Japanese mythology, making it an ideal choice for anime adaptation.
While the anime gears up for its release, fans of the franchise have even more to look forward to. A sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, is slated for release on PlayStation 5 in 2025, and a live-action movie directed by Chad Stahelski (John Wick) is in development.
With PlayStation Productions' successful adaptations like The Last of Us and Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima's anime signals another step in expanding the worlds of PlayStation games into compelling new mediums. Fans can expect more details, including casting and story specifics, as the series moves closer to its 2027 premiere.
