Ghost of Yōtei Announced: The Epic Sequel to Ghost of Tsushima Coming in 2025 for PS5!
The standout announcement from the recent State of Play was Ghost of Yōtei, the highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima by Sucker Punch.
The new game promises to take players beyond Japan in a fresh, unexpected way, while still retaining the core elements that made Ghost of Tsushima great: the gameplay will once again focus on a wandering warrior in feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore a world filled with stunning landscapes. To create something both new and familiar, the developers have shifted away from the original characters and the island of Tsushima. This time, players will step into the shoes of Atsu, a new protagonist wearing the mask of a ghost, as the story unfolds on Mount Yōtei, located in Ezo—an area known today as Hokkaido.
Atsu’s journey begins in 1603, 329 years after the events of the first game, in lands beyond the control of Japan. The game’s world will be filled with sprawling meadows, snowy tundras, and unforeseen dangers. Unlike the samurai clans on Tsushima, the story will introduce fresh and original narrative elements, setting it apart from the previous title.
Visually, Ghost of Yōtei builds on the foundation of Ghost of Tsushima, with significant upgrades. The draw distance has been extended, the skies will feature shimmering stars and auroras, and wind will interact with grass and vegetation in an even more lifelike way. Players can also look forward to new weapons, including firearms, along with fresh gameplay mechanics and plenty of other exciting additions.
The key developers from Ghost of Tsushima—directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell, along with producer Brian Fleming—are all returning to their roles for Ghost of Yōtei. The game is scheduled for release in 2025 and will be available exclusively on PlayStation 5.
