Valve has officially introduced a new Steam Deck featuring an OLED screen and expanded storage of up to 1 TB
Valve has unveiled an updated version of the Steam Deck portable console, equipped with a 7.4-inch OLED screen, replacing the previous 7-inch LCD display. The new screen promises more vibrant colors, deeper blacks, and HDR support.
In addition to the screen upgrade, other components of the device have been enhanced. Users can expect increased battery life, an upgrade from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6E, improved thermal characteristics, and a larger fan. The new version is also 30g lighter compared to the standard Steam Deck.
The new model will be available in 512GB and 1TB storage options. The older models with 64GB and 512GB LCD will be gradually phased out, with the base option remaining the 256GB LCD model.
However, despite these improvements, Valve emphasizes that the Steam Deck OLED is merely an upgrade and not the true next generation of the Steam Deck. As mentioned in an interview with Bloomberg, Steam Deck product designer Lawrence Yang confirms that the team is still working on the "Steam Deck 2," which will receive a significant power boost, but it is not expected to be available for at least two or three years.
Valve developer Pierre-Lou Griffais also stated that changing the performance level is a serious decision, and the company aims to release the next generation of Steam Deck only when there is a substantial increase in performance without compromising energy efficiency and battery life.
The Steam Deck OLED will be available for purchase starting from November 16 at a price of $549/€569/£479 for the 512GB version and $649/€679/£569 for the 1TB version. The reduced price of $399/€419/£349 will apply to the 256GB LCD model, while the 64GB LCD and 512GB LCD models will be gradually phased out as stocks are sold.
