Riot Games is facing a hacker attack. Fraudsters stole the source code of League of Legends

Riot Games has issued an official statement to the community in which they talked about a hacker attack, as a result of which scammers stole the source code of League of Legends. Now the hackers are demanding a ransom in exchange for the safety of their data.

As promised, we wanted to update you on the state of the cyberattack last week. Over the weekend, our analysis confirmed that the source code for League of Legends, TFT, and an outdated anti-cheat platform was stolen by attackers.

Today we received a ransom note. Needless to say, we will not pay. While this attack disrupted our environment and may cause problems in the future, most importantly, we remain confident that no player data or personal data was compromised.

In truth, any disclosure of the source code may increase the likelihood of new cheats. After the attack, we worked to evaluate its impact on anti-cheat and were ready to roll out fixes as soon as possible if necessary.

The illegally obtained source code also includes a number of experimental features. While we hope that some of these game modes and other changes will eventually reach the players, most of this content is in the prototype stage and there is no guarantee that it will ever be released.

Our security teams and world-renowned external consultants continue to evaluate attacks and review our systems. We have also notified law enforcement and are actively cooperating with them as they investigate the attack and the group behind it.

We are committed to transparency and will publish a full report in the future detailing the attackers' methods, areas where Riot Games' security controls failed, and the steps we are taking to ensure this does not happen again.

We've made a lot of progress since last week, and we believe we'll fix some things later this week, allowing us to stay on our regular update cadence going forward. The League of Legends and TFT teams will let you know soon what this means for each game.

In its appeal, the company stated that it would not cooperate with the attackers and would make every effort to resolve the situation in a legal way. Riot Games managed to assure players that their personal data and accounts were not attacked.

The development team is currently continuing to evaluate the damage and will be sharing further details with players. The company will soon publish a report detailing the hack that took place and how to counter scammers in the future.
