Hideo Kojima Praised Resident Evil Adaptation from Zach Cregger

Last month, a new attempt to adapt Resident Evil for the big screen premiered in theaters—this time directed by Zach Cregger, the director of such horror films as Barbarian and Weapons. To say that he succeeded would be an understatement.

His film received the highest critical acclaim of any adaptation in the franchise and also broke the box office record. Interestingly, Cregger did not adapt any specific game but instead came up with his own story about a delivery driver named Brian and relocated the events in Raccoon City to 2026. According to the director himself, he wanted to accurately capture the atmosphere of the universe.

The film and its director also received praise from Hideo Kojima; the game designer wrote on his X page that he was deeply impressed by his version of Resident Evil. You can check out Kojima’s full post below:

I wasn’t particularly interested at first, but since it’s Zach Cregger’s latest film, I went to see “Resident Evil.” Right from the opening, it hits you with music reminiscent of “The Thing.” From there, it’s a relentless barrage of classic horror techniques, terrifying situations, and jump scares that never lets up until the very end. This isn’t a film adaptation of “Resident Evil.” It’s a film about the experience of playing “Resident Evil,” controller in hand. It reminded me of how I felt when I first played the original “Resident Evil” on PlayStation back in 1996. I was just like Bryan in this movie. I kept getting game over after game over, shouting “F***!” over and over again. lol I’m also happy I managed to pick up a program for “Digger.”

Based on data from Box Office Mojo, Resident Evil has already reached $320 million at the worldwide box office. With a budget of $75 million, this is an outstanding result for Sony and Zach Cregger. Recently, the director also hinted he might potentially take on another adaptation; prior to that, he had called Christina Hendricks the perfect choice for Lady Dimitrescu, leading fans to speculate his next project could be a film based on Resident Evil Village.

As for Hideo Kojima, apart from OD and Physint—his upcoming games that are currently in active development—the game designer recently stated fans can expect to see him make a cameo appearance in an upcoming blockbuster movie, video game, and animated projects. Of course, he didn’t specify which projects these would be.
