New Rumor Says Project Helix Will Be More Powerful Than PS6, and Both Consoles Launch in Late 2027

Another showdown between Microsoft and Sony is expected already next year, as both companies are reportedly preparing to release their next-generation consoles—Project Helix and PlayStation 6, respectively. And while many official details remain unknown, a new report sheds light on the specifications of these highly anticipated devices.

Well-known insider Kepler_L2 shared the latest information on this topic while chatting with users on the NeoGAF forum. According to him, Microsoft’s new console, Project Helix, will be more powerful than the PlayStation 6. Its GPU performance is rated at 56 TFLOPS, while the PS6’s is 40 TFLOPS. Furthermore, the insider claims the microchips for both devices have already reached the tape-out stage; this likely means both consoles will be available toward the end of 2027.

According to leaker Kepler_L2, the PS6 and Xbox Helix chips have reportedly reached the tape-out stage, which could point to a late 2027 launch.

The leaked hardware figures suggest:

• PS6: 40 TFLOPS, 52 active RDNA 5 Compute Units, and 30–40GB of GDDR7 memory.
• Xbox Helix: 56 TFLOPS, 68 RDNA 5 Compute Units, and 36–48GB of GDDR7 memory.

That would give Xbox roughly 40% more raw GPU compute performance, at least on paper.

Despite the insider's credibility, the companies have not officially disclosed any details about their next-generation consoles, so for now, this report should be treated as a rumor. Last month, Sony even stated they do not yet have an exact launch date for the PlayStation 6.

As for Project Helix, Microsoft has confirmed the company plans to send alpha versions of the console to game developers in early 2027. Since then, no further details about the device have emerged, aside from various rumors about whether the console will include a disc drive.

Recently, news has also emerged about an upcoming handheld console from Sony— Project Canis. Rumors about it had been circulating since April, but more detailed information about the future console’s specifications has now surfaced. Project Canis is reported to feature a processor with 16 RDNA 5 CUs running at 1.2–1.65 GHz, 24 GB of DDR5X, support for PSSR 3.0 (upscaling + frame generation), native 540p to 1080p upscaling, and may be released toward the end of 2027.
