Sony Confirmed PlayStation 6 Release Date Is Still Unknown

Despite various rumors, Sony still hasn't announced even a rough release window for the next-generation PlayStation 6, and a recent interview with the company's CEO confirms there's still no clarity on the matter.

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki recently spoke with The Wall Street Journal, discussing Sony's position in today's market and outlining the company's top priorities, which include movies, video games, and music. Speaking of PlayStation 6, Totoki claimed the company doesn't have a fixed release date for the console at this point. That ties into several factors, including the ongoing RAM shortage, which, according to Totoki, isn't ending anytime soon.

Sony still hasn’t decided when the PS6 will launch.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki explained that the company is still working on its long-term strategy as it prepares for the next generation of PlayStation.

Totoki said Sony is becoming less dependent on hardware and is putting more focus on its entertainment businesses, including games, movies, music and anime.

Sony wants to make better use of its major franchises across different parts of the company, such as turning successful games into movies and TV shows.

Early rumors suggest the PlayStation 6 could launch in autumn 2027, with full-scale production reportedly starting next May, according to reliable gaming insider Millie A last month. Kepler_L2 had previously reported something similar, pointing to a release during the 2027 holiday season. Another insider's claim that Marvel's Spider-Man: Venom, Insomniac's next project, is coming in November 2027 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 6 could also hint at that same timeline.

According to unconfirmed reports, the PlayStation 6's production cost could already sit around $1,000, with rumored specs including 4K resolution, 120 FPS, and full backward compatibility with both PS4 and PS5. That said, none of this is more than speculation for now, since Sony hasn't confirmed anything about the PlayStation 6 yet.
