Portable PlayStation Project Canis Renders at 540p, Yet Sony Gets Close to PS5 Pro

GameGPU has published a full spec sheet for Project Canis, the portable PlayStation that Sony is aiming at a late 2027 launch.

The handheld renders demanding games at 540p internally, then PSSR 3.0 reconstructs the frame to the 1080p display and adds frame generation on top. That reconstruction is what puts a 15W device in the same conversation as PS5 Pro.

The chip is a custom 3nm AMD part, also called Canis, with six Zen 6 cores split into four Zen 6c and two power-saving Zen 6 LP. It shares 24GB of LPDDR5X over a 192-bit bus with a GPU of 16 RDNA 5 compute units that support Dual-Issue FP32. The whole package sits inside a 15W to 25W power window.

Clocks move with the dock. Handheld, the GPU runs at 1.2 GHz for 4.91 TFLOPS. Docked, it climbs to 1.65 GHz and 6.75 TFLOPS. Raw numbers like that would land below the base PS5, which sits at 10.28 TFLOPS.

According to GameGPU, with PSSR 3.0 doing reconstruction and frame generation, the site pegs the effective figure at 10 to 11 TFLOPS in mobile mode and around 14 TFLOPS when connected to a TV, where aggressive upscaling profiles cut the GPU load by more than half. PS5 Pro delivers 16.7 TFLOPS. Mark Cerny teased proper frame generation for PlayStation hardware earlier this year, and this is where it lands first.

Specification table created on rumors data only. We cannot vouch for its accuracy, but we can regard it as an indicator close to the truth.

The part that decides whether any of this works is the dedicated neural accelerator. FSR runs its spatial filters in software, and pushing a 540p source to 1080p that way produces blurring, flickering thin lines and ghosting behind anything that moves. GameGPU argues the trained models in PSSR 3.0 rebuild texture and geometry detail instead of smearing it. Insider Kepler_L2 goes further and claims PSSR 3 will beat NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 on quality, that Canis is ahead of the Xbox Series S and its 4 TFLOPS in rasterization, far ahead in ray tracing and path tracing, and that the AI block is the reason it outclasses the Switch 2 scaler. He also says the device runs PS4, PS5 and future PS6 libraries locally.

The earlier specs leak from April, from Moore's Law Is Dead and Kepler2, priced the console at $500 to $700 for a late 2027 or early 2028 window and listed a MicroSD slot, an M.2 SSD slot, haptics, dual mics, a touchscreen, and USB-C docking.

Portable PlayStation Project Canis Renders at 540p, Yet Sony Gets Close to PS5 Pro 1

I bought a PS Vita last month and I have been working through the 2010s PlayStation games I skipped, Persona 4 Golden first, so a portable PlayStation that runs the PS4 and PS5 back catalogue locally is the exact device I want to exist. What I do not trust yet is 540p. Vita taught me that a handheld lives or dies on how honest its screen is, and a reconstruction pipeline this aggressive has to hold up in motion, not in a leaked table.

Timing is the other open question. GameGPU puts Canis in late 2027, while the PlayStation 6 itself may slip past that, and Sony has spent this year making decisions that point at a digital future: new games stop shipping on discs in January 2028 under the 'No Disc' plan, which several reports connect to the next console. A MicroSD and M.2 slot on a handheld reads differently once physical releases are gone.

The rest of Sony's year has been rougher. Marvel's Wolverine shipped to a 78 on Metacritic, second from the bottom among PlayStation-published titles. Bungie went through another wave of layoffs after Destiny 2 support ended. Kojima'sPhysint leftPlayStation for Xbox over funding. A handheld that plays three generations of games is a much easier story to tell than any of that.

The handheld question has a rival answer already. Spanish insider Nash Weedle says Rockstar has quietly pushed a GTA 6 Switch 2 port past its technical hurdles and brought in port specialists as a subcontractor, though not for release this year, and Rockstar itself still lists only PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for the November 19 launch. If that rumour holds, Switch 2 becomes the only legal way to play GTA 6 on the move. I have a harder time believing it than believing a new PSP gets there first, because a Sony handheld that runs the PS5 library locally would inherit GTA 6 without a separate port. Switch 2 interests me more as a candidate for Red Dead Redemption 2, a six-year-old engine that a Nintendo handheld can realistically carry.
