Songs of the Past DLC Was Impossible Without The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—Remastered, Fool’s Theory Claims

Even though we still have at least two years to wait for The Witcher 4, the next installment in the franchise, plenty of surprises await fans along the way. As is known, next year The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—released over 11 years ago—will receive a new DLC, Songs of the Past, and in just over two weeks, the original third installment will get an enhanced version. It turns out these two occasions are more closely linked than previously thought.

In a recent interview with Tech Radar, Jakub Rokosz, CEO of Fool’s Theory (the studio developing the DLC) and game director of Songs of the Past, noted that the expansion's release would not have been possible without The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt—Remastered, as the updated version offers numerous new features without which Songs of the Past simply would not have seen the light of day. That is precisely why CD Projekt RED has made the remastered version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt its priority, and the release of Songs of the Past is scheduled for next year. “The stars had to align, so to say, because a few things had to happen. The Songs of the Past expansion and Letten itself, the area that it takes place, it had a certain vision. We had a certain vision for it, and it posed us certain specific technological challenges that was impossible to realize without the remaster changes.

So the conditions had to grow for the remaster to appear on the horizon for us to be able to realize this, so this is actually two things meshing together to make it a reality. One of the challenges when we started prototyping the area was it was impossible to ride with a horse through it, basically. So we had to do some improvements on the horse handling side, right? So, it feels more organic or more natural.”

In another interview, specifically, with BBC News, Jakub Rokosz also revealed that, thanks to the updated version, Geralt will receive a new weapon in Songs of the Past—his signature chain, which could be seen in the debut trailer. Rokosz added that the weapon was originally supposed to appear in the original The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but technical limitations made that impossible.

Earlier, Rokosz also reiterated Dandelion will play a central role in Songs of the Past and the character will be portrayed in a new, more serious light. Given that the story takes place in the Letten region, the character’s homeland, this should come as no surprise to anyone. Incidentally, the voice actor also confirmed Dandelion will return in The Witcher 4.

As for the fourth installment, CD Projekt RED has previously confirmed the game is scheduled for release in 2028. Songs of the Past, a new DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, will release in 2027 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered will be available on September 29 (owners of the original game will receive it for free).
