GTA 6 Could Still Be Postponed to 2027, Former Rockstar Developer Thinks

Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, and several reliable gaming industry insiders have repeatedly confirmed GTA 6 will release November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, without another delay. That's backed up by pre-orders opening back in June, too—though according to a former Rockstar Games developer, a delay still isn't entirely off the table.

Mike York, a former Rockstar animator who worked on GTA 5, recently told Indy100 he doesn't rule out the possibility of Rockstar pushing GTA 6 to 2027. According to him, he would fully understand if Rockstar Games needed extra time to deliver on everything it's promised and doesn't see that as a major issue—GTA 6's audience is huge enough that they'll wait as long as it takes, especially if the extra time goes toward making the game even better. “Personally, after being there and working on GTA 5, I don't currently work there so I can't give a confidence based off that, but based on my previous experience, they could delay it again. Straight up, they could delay it again. They can.

They can do whatever they want and people will wait right now, it doesn't matter. If they need to do what they need to do, they'll do it. So if November comes around and they're thinking 'this final mission we have is still not looking very good and there are still a few bugs in this final mission', they'll push it six more months if they have to. I would not be shocked at all. I don't think it would hurt them or anything.”

Despite York's comments, most fans would likely be pretty disappointed if Rockstar Games decides to postpone GTA 6 to 2027. The game's already been delayed multiple times, after all, and was originally slated for this year—even a delay of just a few months could dampen expectations and push other studios, wary of the competition, to delay their own releases too. Still, this is just one former developer's opinion, not something guaranteed to happen.

Meanwhile, there's a chance new game’s material could be revealed very soon. Reliable insiders have recently reported as much, and according to the latest rumor, a new trailer featuring a first look at GTA 6's gameplay could be even dropped tomorrow. However, such rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.
