Digital Foundry Doubts GTA 6 Will Run at 60 FPS on Consoles—30 to 40 FPS Seems More Likely
Recently, new information has surfaced online regarding the potential performance of GTA 6 on consoles: the game is reportedly expected to run at 30 FPS in Quality Mode and 60 FPS in Performance Mode. Despite this promising claim from a reputable insider, Digital Foundry expresses doubts about these figures being achievable.
Less than a day ago, the official Digital Foundry YouTube channel released a new podcast in which GTA 6 and its potential technical specifications were one of the main topics. The team of experts concluded that achieving 60 FPS on current-generation consoles could be challenging due to the limited processing power of the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and even the PlayStation 5 Pro. GTA 6 aims to deliver a dynamic open-world simulation featuring a massive number of NPCs, advanced AI-driven graphics, and other hardware-intensive features. According to Digital Foundry, maintaining a quality mode at 30 FPS remains likely, but instead of a solid 60 FPS, Rockstar Games might offer several presets for players—such as a special mode for 120Hz TVs that outputs around 40 FPS and a more performance-focused mode with certain compromises. Nevertheless, a guaranteed 60 FPS experience is still uncertain.
That said, Rockstar Games has yet to reveal the specifications of GTA 6 for consoles, but PlayStation has already made several statements claiming that the PlayStation 5 is the best platform to play the game. This marketing strategy seems to have worked, as early data shows that pre-orders for GTA 6 on PlayStation 5 are outpacing those on Xbox Series X/S by a ratio of 6 to 1.
