Third-Person Mode, Reworked Story, and Release Window: Resident Evil Veronica Details Revealed
After much speculation and insider information, Capcom has finally announced the remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, now simply titled Resident Evil Veronica. As expected, the game has quickly gained popularity not only among franchise fans but also with the vast majority of gamers. The remake ranked among the top three most discussed games revealed over the past week, trailing only God of War Laufey and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Additionally, it has already surpassed one million wishlist additions, marking an outstanding achievement.
Shortly after the announcement, Capcom and other media outlets began releasing initial information about Resident Evil Veronica to give players a general idea of what the studio has in store. Although the debut teaser was filmed entirely from a first-person perspective, remake producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed that the game will actually feature a third-person mode. It is being developed by the same team behind the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes. Additionally, he confirmed earlier rumors that Claire Redfield will be the main protagonist in the new game. Below, you can find key highlights from IGN 's report, which reference Hirabayashi's statements:
“This game will be a third-person game. However, the team behind this remake is the same team that handled the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes. So if you looked at the past remakes that this team has created, you can probably sense a certain mindset that we have when we make a game, and that mindset includes preserving those iconic and key aspects of the title. So again, if you look at our work, you can probably get kind of a good sense of what kind of approach we're taking here, and maybe you can imagine what that might look like for this remake.
So during Resident Evil 2, she was a university student. Veronica takes place about three months after the events of Resident Evil 2. So let's just think about how that progression or how much change happened in about three months. So again, three months is not a lot of time. Of course, she has had training from her brother, and of course, she survived the incident in Raccoon City, so she's not going to be the exact same character. But the portrayal of her and her style is going to be in alignment with that timeline and that history that we're looking at for Veronica.”
Meanwhile, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, another producer of Resident Evil Veronica, revealed some details about the upcoming remake’s storyline. He mentioned that Capcom has significantly reworked many elements compared to the original, yet the key moments remain intact. The studio aims to reinterpret the story, making it more cohesive while introducing new elements, much like they did with the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 remakes. You can find excerpts from his Famitsu interview below:
“We’ve had the opportunity to remake Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, and Resident Evil 4, and there’s a rich history and narrative that spans all the way to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil Village, and Resident Evil Requiem. For this title as well, we’re planning to restructure the story so that players can clearly feel how these titles are all part of a cohesive series,”
Capcom has confirmed that Resident Evil Veronica will be released in 2027, although the exact release date remains unknown. Meanwhile, well-known franchise insider Dusk Golem has stated that the studio is considering launching the game in the first quarter of 2027 —that is, sometime between January 1 and March 31.
“I still suspect they're aiming for Q1 in 2027 for Resident Evil Veronica if possible. My guess is maybe they're not certain fully on a date yet due to a mixture of some late dev work, & maybe eyeing how other game releases fall into the calendar with it being GTA6 season. Capcom right before Veronica's release posted their fiscal year 2026 projections, they plan for new release sales to do even better than last year with Requiem & had "unannounced games" for the fiscal year ending March 31st 2027, really Veronica only makes logical sense now.”
In turn, Capcom is also working on a story DLC for Resident Evil Requiem, but the developers didn't dedicate any time to it last week. According to Dusk Golem, it’s likely that the story expansion's release will be delayed— it will come out after Resident Evil Veronica is launched.
