Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Confirmed to Have Connections With Lara Croft Survivor Trilogy

As is well known, Crystal Dynamics is actively working on their next project in the Tomb Raider universe—Legacy of Atlantis, which is a remake of the original 1996 game. Following this logic, fans might have assumed that the game would have no connection to the recently released trilogy from the same developers—the Survivor trilogy (Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider)—but in reality, that’s not the case.

Recently, the developers spoke with IGN and made an interesting statement: the events of Legacy of Atlantis take place after the Survivor trilogy, where we see Lara in her prime. This was revealed by Jeff Adams, Experience Director for Crystal Dynamics, as you can check out below:

“The events of the Survivor Series did occur, and this is the same Lara, but we are finding her at this point in her career.”

This statement is undoubtedly intriguing, as it opens the door for Crystal Dynamics to potentially canonize other older games in the franchise in the future by turning them into remakes. There have been previous rumors suggesting that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis might unify all timelines, and the developer’s statement seems to confirm this possibility.

In turn, Raul Siqueira, the game director of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, stated during the recent Future Games Show that the game is more of a reimagining of the original rather than a traditional remake, as you can check out his words below:

“It's important for us to distinguish that this isn't a remake. A remake rebuilds what already exists with modern technology. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis goes further than that and truly reimagines the debut game all while keeping its soul intact.”

It’s also important to remember that Tomb Raider: Catalyst—the next mainline Tomb Raider video game—is currently in development and will serve as a sequel to 2008’s Tomb Raider: Underworld. This could cause some confusion, as the original game is closely connected to the 1996 Tomb Raider title known as Legacy of Atlantis. Regardless, Crystal Dynamics appears to be committed to actively expanding the Lara Croft franchise and genuinely aims to unify all the different timelines.
