Multiplayer Assassin’s Creed Title Received First Reviews—It's Described as “Terrible”
Following the full reveal of the Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag remake, Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, at the end of last month, player interest in the series has clearly surged. The project looks extremely intriguing, offering fans a host of new features, but other games in the franchise are also currently in development.
One such title is the next mainline game, Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe, which is set during the 16th-century witch hunts in Germany. According to recent reports, the game is set to release in 2027, and since Jean Guedson took over as creative director, it is reported that magical elements have been removed, and Codename Hexe is now expected to be more grounded and focused on realism.
In addition, Ubisoft is also developing a multiplayer game based on the franchise—Assassin's Creed Codename Invictus; it has been confirmed that this will be “a multiplayer Assassin's Creed experience led by a dedicated team of For Honor veterans at Ubisoft Montreal,” and, according to rumors, it will visually resemble Fall Guys. Details about the game are being kept under wraps, but there are reports that we will see characters from different parts of the series battling each other in locations spanning various time periods.
Although Codename Invictus may sound promising, according to Assassin's Creed insider xj0nathan, the game underwent its first tests late last month, and those involved say it looks “terrible.” It was originally scheduled for release in late 2026, but there is a possibility that the project could be delayed or even canceled.
“There were tests of Assassin's Creed Invictus last month (April 30th, to be exact), and I've heard it's absolutely terrible. It's supposed to be released at the end of the year, but there's a good chance it will be delayed or even canceled.”
Given the success and buzz surrounding Black Flag Resynced, Codename Invictus might turn out to be yet another example of why Ubisoft shouldn’t be getting into multiplayer games. But apparently, XDefiant wasn’t enough for them, and it will be interesting to see how this new Assassin’s Creed multiplayer project ultimately turns out. Given that the studio has canceled several projects in recent months, including a new IP— Alterra, a life simulator inspired by Animal Crossing and Minecraft —it cannot be ruled out that Assassin's Creed Codename Invictus will be next.
As for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, the game releases on July 9 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
