New Protagonist, Moscow in Ruins, and Return to Tunnels: Metro 2039 Details Leaked
About one hour remains until the official reveal of Metro 2039—the new game in the Metro franchise developed by 4A Games. The teaser of the latest title was revealed last week, and the game will be officially shown later on tonight during Xbox First Look presentation.
Ahead of the upcoming presentation, Reddit user ZamnBoii revealed the first details of Metro 2039, with a reference to gaming insider 56Manuek, who revealed the details about the upcoming game’s trailer and also provided information about its story, gameplay, technical stuff, and release window. You can check out more information about Metro 2039 in a Reddit post below:
The trailer is approximately 3 minutes long, 4 year time jump from Exodus and your save file from Exodus will carry over.
Moscow in Ruins: Scenes of a devastated Moscow were shown, featuring an unprecedented level of graphical detail. A standout shot of the surface shows ash-colored snow, suggesting a more severe nuclear winter.
Return to the Metro: Much of the footage takes place in narrow tunnels and stations converted into fortresses, signaling a shift away from wide open-world maps back to the claustrophobia of the first games.
Hunter's Regime: It has been confirmed that Hunter is not only alive but leading a faction called Novoreich. The trailer shows scenes of his authoritarian government, which uses propaganda and fear to control the population.
The "Outsider": A new protagonist (or a significantly changed version of a known one) nicknamed "The Outsider" is introduced. He lives exiled on the surface and is forced to return to the Metro due to visions and ghosts from the past. Fully voiced.
The Station Creature (Based on Metro 2034):Although not officially named in the video, a mass of mutant tissue and limbs was shown, reminiscent of the creature that attacked Hunter in the Metro 2034 novel, suggesting that book-exclusive enemies are finally coming to the game.
New enemy types include Shadow Stalkers who areighly agile humanoid creatures that avoid direct light. The trailer showcases how they utilize the new global illumination mechanics to hide in pitch-black corners, attacking only when the player's flashlight battery runs out. Versions of the classic Nosalis were shown but with more group-oriented and tactical behavior, capable of flanking the player. Ash Mutants are creatures adapted to the new "radioactive ash storms" have been seen. They possess natural camouflage that makes them nearly invisible during blizzards, forcing the player to rely on sound to detect them.
The game is designed exclusively for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC, utilizing an advanced version of the 4A Games engine with native Ray Tracing to achieve realistic lighting.
Great emphasis has been placed on the new particle system. The trailer shows radioactive ash storms on the surface of Moscow that dynamically affect visibility and smudge the gas mask in real-time.
The game is also reportedly set to release this October. So far, this information hasn’t been confirmed by 4A Games, so this report should be considered with a grain of salt. We'll find out soon enough whether this information is true or not.
