Clash Royale Merge Tactics Season 8 — New Ruler, Troops & Meta Changes
Clash Royale has launched Merge Tactics Season 8, introducing fresh content and gameplay changes following the extended format introduced in Season 7. The update brings a new Ruler, additional troops, new modifiers, and balance adjustments that reshape the meta.
New Ruler: Grand Warden
Season 8 introduces the Grand Warden as a new Ruler focused on survivability and shields. His ability, Shield Sponsor, grants a protective shield to the ally with the lowest HP percentage at two intervals—after 5 seconds and again at 15 seconds.

The second shield comes with an added effect: when it breaks, it deals damage to enemies within a small area. The Grand Warden also features a dedicated reward track on the Starsteel Road, where players can unlock cosmetics such as Dark Warden, Gilded Warden, and new visual effects. Additional cosmetics are also available for Elixir Loong.
Expanded Troop Pool
Unlike previous updates, no troops have been removed in Season 8, resulting in a larger and more diverse unit pool. This change makes matches less predictable and opens up more strategic options.
New and Returning Units
3-Elixir Troops:
- Executioner – Throws a boomerang axe that hits multiple targets
- Royal Ghost – Periodically turns invisible, making it harder to target
4-Elixir Troops:
- Bandit – Dashes through enemies, dealing damage and briefly stunning them
- Princess – Long-range attacker with splash damage
To support the expanded roster, base Elixir per round has been increased to 5, or 6 when using Elixir Loong, allowing for stronger setups earlier in matches.

Trait System Adjustments
Trait thresholds have been updated to allow for more flexible builds:
- Ace, Assassin, and Hinder now support 4-unit bonuses
- Noble and Undead can reach up to 6-unit bonuses with the right modifiers
New Shield Modifiers
A key addition in Season 8 is Shield Modifiers, which activate effects when shields break:
- Rage Shield – Boosts ally speed and attack
- Slowdown Shield – Reduces enemy speed and attack
- Star Shield – Levels up nearby units
- Lava Shield – Deals damage over time based on enemy HP
These modifiers synergize especially well with the Grand Warden’s shield-focused playstyle.

Additional Modifiers
Several new modifiers have also been added to reward specific strategies:
- Winners Gonna Win – Grants extra Elixir after winning a round
- 3-Star Fantasy – Boosts HP and damage of max-level troops
- Trait Gift – Provides bonus Elixir for active traits
- We Are the Champions – Enhances high-cost units with extra stats
What This Means for Gameplay
Season 8 introduces more variety and strategic depth, with a stronger emphasis on shield mechanics, flexible builds, and resource management. The expanded troop pool and new modifiers are expected to significantly impact how players approach matches.
