Crystal Dynamics Is Working On The Lord of the Rings Video Game

Yesterday, it was reported that Warhorse Studios, the developers of Kingdom Come: Deliverance franchise, are reportedly working on an RPG based on The Lord of the Rings universe. This information was shared by Polish gaming industry veteran Richard Chojnowski during the Tolken Polska podcast. However, a new report gives an update of which studio is working on the game.

According to an exclusive report from Insider Gaming, Crystal Dynamics is the studio that is developing a $100 million budget, presumably, action RPG video game set in The Lord of the Rings franchise. This studio is well-known for Tomb Raider video games (Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider), and they also confirmed to be working on two new game series installments, announced at last year’s The Game Awards—Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst.

Crystal Dynamics Is Working On The Lord of the Rings Video Game 1

As revealed by the source, the game is still in the early stage of development and still far away from its release. Previous rumors suggested the new Lord of the Rings video game will have a huge open world, full of activities, where you can do whatever, you want. And let’s not forget the statement from Warner Bros. Discovery boss JB Perrette, who revealed that in the next couple of years the studio’s biggest franchises will return. As we know, Warner Bros. owns the rights for the LoTR universe, and that makes an announcement more likely after tonight’s report.

Hopefully, recent layoffs at Crystal Dynamics will not affect the development of the Lord of the Rings title, as well as the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst, which are expected to release in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
