Crystal Dynamics Has Lost Another Part of Employees Due to Layoffs

Crystal Dynamics studio is known as Tomb Raider game series developers, and the future looks exciting for Lara Croft as two new games are confirmed to be in development. One of them, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, will surprisingly be the sequel to 2008’s Tomb Raider: Underworld, not the latest title, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, released in 2018. Another title is the remake of the original game, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which is also reportedly set to unite all Tomb Raider franchises together.

Unfortunately, today wasn’t a great day for some of Crystal Dynamics employees, as the studio announced via its official LinkedIn account that 20 developers have left the company due to layoffs. It’s the fourth time the studio is losing its people: since March 2025, more than 50 employees have parted ways with the studio, and the fans are hopeful it will not affect the development of the future Tomb Raider installments, but as mentioned in Crystal Dynamics’ statement that you can check out below, “Crystal Dynamics remains fully committed to the future development of our already announced Tomb Raider titles.”

“Today, Crystal Dynamics is reducing its workforce by 20 talented team members, split between some development personnel and some central operations roles. This is a difficult day for our studio, and we never make these decisions lightly, particularly after the restructuring we underwent last year.

As our current projects move into new phases of development, we continuously take a hard look at our team structures to ensure they align with our long-term studio goals. While we always strive to transition our people into new roles whenever possible, we have unfortunately reached a point where these departures are necessary.

We are incredibly grateful for the passion and hard work these individuals have poured into our games and our studio. We are providing them with severance and job placement assistance to help them land their next opportunity. If you have openings or know of positions for talented developers, please contact us and we'll connect them.

We know that news like this can cause concern amongst our community. Crystal Dynamics remains fully committed to the future development of our already announced Tomb Raider titles. Today, however, our priority is supporting our colleagues who are moving on.”

Neither Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis nor Tomb Raider: Catalyst still has a release date. Legacy of Atlantis is still planned to release this year on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5, and Tomb Raider: Catalyst is set to launch next year. However, considering another round of layoffs, it’s getting more likely both games will be postponed. There is also a TV show titled Tomb Raider, developing for Amazon Prime Video and starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft.
