Crimson Desert Story Has Been Rewritten During Development
Crimson Desert, one of the biggest releases of 2026, has finally been launched on PC and consoles. The game is actually doing well in sales, with more than 2 million copies having been sold. Although player feedback is currently mixed across all the platforms.
As it turned out, not everything was great with Crimson Desert development, not only because the game has been postponed multiple times. Reddit user 1stGuard has referenced the developer’s comment on the anonymous forum Blind, where some interesting revelations about Crimson Desert production have been revealed. One of the most important statements is related to the game’s story—it was rewritten during the development, and the original concept was so much more exciting. It featured young king, who had his throne usurped, and the middle-age prime-minister, who was looking after a young king and a young princess came and asked to make them royalty. In the end, the middle-age prime minister was supposed to betray them and try to become the king himself. The story of Crimson Desert was about stopping this.
But what’s more impressive is the atmosphere inside Pearl Abyss studio. According to the source, it was impossible to criticize ideas of the bosses, and they were surrounded by “assentators” even in the moments when they had to make some crucial decision about the game. "These posts were shared in the Game Industry Lounge on Blind, an anonymous community accessible only to verified industry professionals. Users must verify their identity using their corporate email, which then displays their current workplace on their profile. The first post was written by a former Pearl Abyss dev who has since moved to Nexon Game, and the second is from a current pearl abyss dev.
There are also some comments from other Pearl Abyss employees on the original post, all expressing their agreement with what was said.
additionally In the Korean gaming community, Pearl Abyss is well-known for having a culture where developers hold excessive influence, leading to a lack of centralized game designers or creative directors. This stems from the founder's original vision: he established Pearl Abyss specifically because he was frustrated with environments where the actual developers—the ones building the game—weren't allowed to create as they saw fit. I suspect this is exactly why we ended up with a game that is technically impressive but hollow in every other way
*sorry guys i was not sure about English spelling of 맥더프, so i just went with the translator gave me. seems like MacDuff is more accurate spelling of 맥더프 then Macbeth"
So far, Crimson Desert is doing really well, as it currently has a 78-critic score on Metacritic and a 7.8 user score based on 2,775 reviews, while other notable outlets have rated the game high. Unfortunately, taking into consideration the above-mentioned information, Crimson Desert might have been an even better title, but creative differences are something that can happen during the development of any title.
